This chapter covers essential anaesthetic equipment. It begins with the preparation of the anaesthetic room, the stocking of essential items, and different machines. It then covers ventilators, vaporizers, breathing systems, humidifiers, and blood and fluid warmers. Patient monitoring (and non-invasive monitoring), pulse oximetry, central venous pressure, and oesophageal Doppler are all explained. Monitoring the obese patient is described, alongside arterial blood gases and acid–base balance. Medical gas cylinders and the pin index system is also covered.
