A programme was undertaken in order to quantify the heavy-metal contribution from domestic sources with respect to total loads entering a chosen sewage-treatment works. Input waters, household cleaning and body-care products, and wastewater from household appliances, were sampled and analysed for heavy metals. The data were combined with literature values to predict the total load of heavy metals entering the sewage-treatment works from the study catchment. This paper identifies the major domestic sources of heavy metals and quantifies them based upon a catchment model.
A system is described in which a graphite rod electrothermal vaporisation device is employed for the introduction of microlitre liquid samples, after desolvation, into an inductively coupled argon plasma source for atomisation and excitation for optical emission spectrometry. The analytical performance of the system has been studied and detection limits for 16 elements a t the sub-nanogram level are presented.
scite is a Brooklyn-based organization that helps researchers better discover and understand research articles through Smart Citations–citations that display the context of the citation and describe whether the article provides supporting or contrasting evidence. scite is used by students and researchers from around the world and is funded in part by the National Science Foundation and the National Institute on Drug Abuse of the National Institutes of Health.
