The management of people with diabetic nephropathy includes control of risk factors such as blood pressure, cholesterol levels and body weight in addition to good glycaemic control. Audit data from the authors’ clinic—run jointly by a nephrologist and diabetes specialist nurse, supported by specialist renal nurses and a dietician—revealed good control of cardiovascular risk factors, especially, cholesterol and blood pressure. The reason for better outcomes in this cohort of patients is thought to be due to the close collaboration between renal and diabetes teams in delivering structured care.
