Anurans of Puducherry, a union territory measuring 293 km2, on the East coast of India are understudied. In this communication, we provide a comprehensive list of anurans encountered in and around wetlands across this union territory. Visual Encounter Surveys during the rainy season in 17 wetlands yielded a total of 14 species belonging to four families. This diversity is relatively low compared to other urban areas like Bangalore or Pune having 16 and 31 species respectively. Possible reasons for this low diversity and scope for future studies have been emphasized.
A year-long study was conducted at the Kole Wetlands, a Ramsar site in central Kerala to document the diversity of dragonflies and damselflies and understand their seasonality. Checklist survey method was used to sample adult odonates in 30 randomly chosen locations. A total of 44 species (30 dragonflies and 14 damselflies) belonging to 33 genera and eight families were recorded in the study area. Species richness showed a peak in the post-monsoon season and a dip in the summer. The observations support the value of the Kole Wetlands in providing valuable resources for Odonata.
Full illustrated descriptions are presented of the copepodid stage of Pseudocharopinus narc#tae (Pillai), lsobranchia appendiculata Heegaard and Brachiella trichim'i Gnanamuthu. The structure of the copepodid of P. narcinae is similar to that of P. dentatus (Wilson). The copepodids of both L appendiculata and B. trichiuri are identical with regard to the structure of the second antenna, first maxilla and second maxilla. This structural similarity of the copepodids of 1. appendiculata and B. trichiu,'i indicate the phylogenetic position of the Brachiella and Clavella groups within the family Lernaeopodidae.
scite is a Brooklyn-based organization that helps researchers better discover and understand research articles through Smart Citations–citations that display the context of the citation and describe whether the article provides supporting or contrasting evidence. scite is used by students and researchers from around the world and is funded in part by the National Science Foundation and the National Institute on Drug Abuse of the National Institutes of Health.
