Background/aim: To determine whether there was a difference between serum and hair trace elements' concentrations in patients with Alzheimer disease (AD) and healthy participants. Materials and methods:Hair and serum copper, selenium, zinc, magnesium, manganese, and iron levels were measured by inductively coupled plasma-mass spectrometry in patients with AD and healthy participants, and the obtained results were statistically compared. Results:The mean hair selenium and zinc levels of patients with AD were significantly lower than the levels found for control participants (P < 0.05). Patients with AD had significantly higher mean hair copper and manganese levels than the controls. There were no significant differences between AD patients and controls with respect to the hair iron and magnesium levels (P > 0.05). Hair and serum trace element (copper, selenium, zinc, magnesium, manganese, and iron) levels in patients with AD showed no significant difference according to mini mental test scores or sex (P > 0.05). Conclusion:Some trace element levels may change in patients with AD. Due to the more permanent status, the analysis of these element levels in hair might be superior to blood analysis.
Evaluation of cardiac structures requires a large study group for accurate data on normal values. The aim of the study was to obtain normal M mode echocardiographic values in a substantial sample of healthy term neonates and children to develop centile charts.Materials and methods: Data were obtained over 2 years from a single center in Turkey, from 1200 healthy infants and children aged 1 day to 17 years. Using echocardiographic investigation, measurements were obtained of the following: left ventricular dimension at end diastole and end systole; thickness of interventricular septum and posterior wall of the left ventricle; aortic and pulmonary root diameter; and left atrial dimension. The influence of systematic errors as statistical noise in this large sample was decreased using thirddegree polynomial curves. Results: Measurements are presented graphically as curved lines of centiles with respect to body weight for healthy term neonates and children. The values showed a good correlation with body weight and allowed the construction of percentile curves (5%, 25%, 50%, 75%, and 95%). Higher values were observed in boys during adolescence. Conclusion:The presented charts and tables make it possible to judge the echocardiographic measurements of a particular patient as normal or abnormal.
Objective: This study aimed to investigate the smoking prevalence and associated factors among the students of Balıkesir University and determine the level of nicotine dependence in smokers. Methods:Six faculties and two graduate schools located at the Balıkesir University campus were enrolled. The cluster method was used as the sampling method. To observe the rates of smoking initiation while studying at the university, first-year and final year students were compared. Results: A total of 1096 students were enrolled, with a mean age of 20.4±2.2 years. The regular smoking prevalence rate was 25.5%, occasional smoking rate was 9.5%, alcohol consumption rate was 28.0%, and drug abuse rate was 5.0%. The mean age for attempting to smoke was 16.6±2.2 years. The leading causes of smoking were curiosity, spiritual space, affection, and to comply with friends. According to the Fagerström questionnaire, the level of nicotine dependence was low in 53.0% of the participants, moderate in 8.7%, and high in 28.4%. The average smoking prevalence rate was 23.6% in first-grade students, whereas it was 44.8% in last-grade students. The factors that influence smoking were as follows: being in the last grade, mother, siblings, and friends who smoke, higher allowance, use of alcohol and drugs. Smoking was found to be more prevalent among males. Conclusion:Last-grade students had a higher smoking prevalence rate than the first-grade students. Family, social environment, and smoking behavior of friends have an influence on smoking. All risk factors, including past history and university period, should be considered together in tobacco control.
Polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) is a multifactorial disease characterised by chronic inflammation. We aimed to investigate an association between IL-1A and IL-6 gene polymorphisms and both hormonal/biochemical parameters and levels of IL-1A and IL-6. A total of 103 women diagnosed with PCOS according to ESHRE/ASRM criteria were investigated. The patients were divided into two groups as obese and non-obese. IL-1A and IL-6 genes polymorphisms as well as hormonal/biochemical parameters and levels of IL-1A and IL-6 were analysed in the same groups. Serum IL-1A and IL-6 levels were found to increase both in obese and non-obese groups. However, there was no association between IL-1A level and IL-1A polymorphism. A relationship was detected between H score, FSH, LH, total testosterone, HDL-C and TG levels and CG + GG genotypes of IL-6. Furthermore, an association was found between IL-6 levels and CC genotype of IL-6 in the obese PCOS patients. The abnormalities in hormonal/biochemical parameters detected in Turkish PCOS patients may be related with IL-6 gene polymorphism rather than IL-1A.
scite is a Brooklyn-based organization that helps researchers better discover and understand research articles through Smart Citations–citations that display the context of the citation and describe whether the article provides supporting or contrasting evidence. scite is used by students and researchers from around the world and is funded in part by the National Science Foundation and the National Institute on Drug Abuse of the National Institutes of Health.
