From ancient history, complementary and alternative medicines have played a significant role as holistic therapeutic treatments of various human diseases including cancer, diabetes, neurological diseases, and skin problems. One Indian medicinal plant (herb), Bacopa monnieri has been used in many parts of the world as such medicine, particularly for the treatment of various neurological disorders. It is well known as a potent "tonic for the human brain," which serves as a memory enhancer. Multiple studies proved that this herb contains a plethora of potential bioactive, phytochemical compounds with synergistic properties. The main purpose of the present review is to shed light on the use of Bacopa monnieri and its active principles (bacosides) in the management of neurological disorders. Furthermore, the signaling pathways modulated by bacosides have been critically discussed in this review. Moreover, we have critically summarized the present knowledge of this perennial creeping herb based upon the literature mining from different scientific engines.
The importance of circular RNAs (circRNAs) in pathological processes like cancer is evident. Among the circRNAs, recent studies have brought circPVT1 under focus as the most potent oncogenic non-coding RNA. Recent studies on various aspects of circPVT1, including its biogenesis, molecular alteration and its probable role in oncogenesis, have been conducted for research and clinical interest. In this review, a first attempt has been made to summarise the available data on circPVT1 from PubMed and other relevant databases with special emphasis on its role in development, progression and prognosis of various malignant conditions. CircPVT1 is derived from the same genetic locus encoding for long non-coding RNA lncPVT1; however, existing literature suggested circPVT1 and lncPVT1 are transcripted independently by different promoters. The interaction between circRNA and microRNA has been highlighted in majority of the few malignancies in which circPVT1 was studied. Besides its importance in diagnostic and prognostic procedures, circPVT1 seemed to have huge therapeutic potential as evident from differential drug response of cancer cell line as well as primary tumors depending on expression level of the candidate. circPVT1 in cancer therapeutics might be promising as a biomarker to make the existing treatment protocol more effective and also as potential target for designing novel therapeutic intervention.
Garlic (Allium sativa L.) is a bulbous flowering plant belongs to the family of Amaryllidaceae and is a predominant horticultural crop originating from central Asia. Garlic and its products are chiefly used for culinary and therapeutic purposes in many countries. Bulbs of raw garlic have been investigated for their role in oral health, which are ascribed to a myriad of biologically active compounds such as alliin, allicin, methiin, S-allylcysteine (SAC), diallyl sulfide (DAS), S-ally-mercapto cysteine (SAMC), diallyl disulphide (DADS), diallyl trisulfide (DATS) and methyl allyl disulphide. A systematic review was conducted following the PRISMA statement. Scopus, PubMed, Clinicaltrials.gov, and Science direct databases were searched between 12 April 2021 to 4 September 2021. A total of 148 studies were included and the qualitative synthesis phytochemical profile of GE, biological activities, therapeutic applications of garlic extract (GE) in oral health care system, and its mechanism of action in curing various oral pathologies have been discussed. Furthermore, the safety of incorporation of GE as food supplements is also critically discussed. To conclude, GE could conceivably make a treatment recourse for patients suffering from diverse oral diseases.
