The U.S. population is aging, and many older adults are projected to struggle with substance use disorder (SUD) and trauma issues. However, to date no studies exist of the national SUD treatment landscape with regard to specialized services for older adults and trauma counseling. To address this literature gap, data were surveyed from the 2009 to 2011 administration of the National Survey of Substance Abuse Treatment Services (N-SSATS) regarding facilities that offered specialized services for both geropsychological and trauma counseling care (n ϭ 854). Results underscore that treatment availability for this specialized population is scarce throughout most of the U.S., and no more than 1 quarter of these treatment facilities are accredited by a major body such as JCAHO or CARF. Suggestions for improving treatment accessibility nationwide, better matching the treatment orientations to the geropsychological SUD population, and curriculum matters for clinical and counseling psychology training programs are all discussed.
