Tuberculosis (TB) of the breast is a very rare pathology. The clinical presentations of this disease are manifold, often mimicking carcinoma of the breast. We conducted a retrospective analysis of 20 women with TB of the breast receiving care at the mastology clinic at Getúlio Vargas Hospital, PI, Brazil, between 1994 and 2007. The clinical presentation of the disease, the diagnosis and the response to specific treatment were analyzed. Most of the patients were of reproductive age, with the disease affecting the right breast in eleven patients (55%) and the left breast in nine patients (45%). Palpable nodules were present in five patients (25%) and fistulae in 15 (75%). The mean time between onset of symptoms and diagnosis was 7.7 months (range 3-12 months). Skin testing with purified protein derivative of tuberculin was strongly reactive in all patients, six (30%) of whom were breastfeeding. Diagnosis was confirmed by histopathology and all patients were satisfactorily treated with a combination of rifampicin, isoniazid and pyrazinamide. In the present study, TB of the breast presented predominantly as breast abscesses and fistulae and responded satisfactorily to treatment with anti-TB drugs.
-Research on the performance of cover crops in crop systems of annual crops in the Brazilian state of Piauí contributes to increases in yield, greater efficiency of fertilizers and mitigation of environmental impacts. The aim of this study was to evaluate the performance of cover crops in terms of biomass production and the accumulation and release of nutrients during the crop season (November to April) in an oxisol in the Brazilian Cerrado in the state of Piauí that was submitted to different crop production systems including soybeans, maize and upland rice. The experiment was established during the 2010/11 and 2011/12 crop years in the rural area near the municipality of Bom Jesus, Piauí. The experimental design was a randomized block in a split-plot array. Different soil management systems (conventional and no-till) were evaluated in the main plots. Different crop production systems consisting of cover crops sown in the off-season (April to November), and annual crops sown during the crop season (November to April) were implemented in the subplots. The crop production systems that included Urochloa ruziziensis and Pennisetum glaucum overseeded on soybeans and Urochloa ruziziensis simultaneously intercropped with maize stood out in terms of biomass production and the accumulation and release of nutrients. Yields of maize and upland rice declined when sown under newly implemented no-till soil management. Keywords: Brachiaria. Millet. Crotalaria. No-till. Decomposition. A B S T R A C TTree species have potential for use in various industries and supply chains. In this context, biometrics constitutes an important tool to identify key features intrinsic to the fruit and seed. Therefore, the aim of this study was to characterize biometrically the fruits and seeds of mirindiba and inajá and to correlate the fruit and seed parameters of each species in order to obtain information on biometric variation. Equatorial diameter, longitudinal length, fresh pulp, fresh weight of the fruit pulp and seed, fruit volume, volume index of seeds, humidity of the pulp and seed moisture collected in south of Piaui, were analyzed, considering 100 fresh fruits and 100 seeds from ten trees of each species. Biometric features were analyzed by frequency distribution, calculating the Spearman correlation coefficient (rs) and the level of significance using the t test. The fruits and seeds of mirindiba and inajá exhibit variability for most biometric characteristics evaluated, as well as predominantly positive correlation between them. The fruits have great economic potential for the high yield of pulp observed, with the possible selection of fruits with higher pulp content by characteristics such as weight and fruit size.
Embryonal rhabdomyosarcomas of the uterus are extremely rare malignant tumors and their association with uterine inversion is even rarer. The present case report refers to a 15-year-old Brazilian girl admitted to hospital with a 3-month history of transvaginal bleeding and a mass protruding from the vaginal introitus. Following biopsy of the lesion and confirmation of the diagnosis of embryonal rhabdomyosarcoma, the patient was submitted to total abdominal hysterectomy followed by chemotherapy and radiotherapy. The patient died 9 months after surgery. Embryonal rhabdomyosarcoma of the uterus is very rare and extremely aggressive. According to a published work review, there has been only one report to date on the association of embryonal rhabdomyosarcoma of the uterus and uterine inversion.
