Contextual Teaching Learning (CTL) has been widely implemented in ELT. However, little used it specifically in speaking class in Islamic studies course. This research, which was a four-cycle action research conducted at the fourth semester English Language Education students at an Islamic university in Lampung, Indonesia aimed to find out how CTL can improve speaking skills especially in the subject of public speaking which includes storytelling, speech, News casting and drama in Speaking for Islamic Studies course. The data were obtained qualitatively through interviews, observation and filed notes during the learning process and also quantitatively through speaking tests for four cycles. Data were then analyzed by comparing the results of the pre-test, 55. 63 and the results of the post test after taking action in each cycle, namely storytelling gained 60.45, speech reached 64.9, news casting was 66.70, and the final drama reached 73.2. In addition, students tended to feel enthusiastic to work together in study groups and also thought critically, especially when connecting understanding the concept of language with the appropriate language context during their involvement in the speaking class. In other words, CTL could improve the students’ speaking abilities and also the quality of their learning activities. Thus, CTL could be implemented as one of the effective methods of speaking learning, especially those related to the Islamic context.
This research concerned with the translation of intransitive phrasal verb in Brown’s Principle of Language Learning and Teaching from English into Indonesian. The type of this research was qualitative research which dealt with non-numerical data. This research was analyzed by using the techniques proposed by Cresswell. There are six steps, namely (1) preparing the data for analysis; (2) looking and reading all the data; (3) coding all the data; (4) using the coding to describe the setting; (5) making advanced description; and (6) making interpretation. The finding results show that the accuracy level and readability level in Brown’s Principle of Language Learning and Teaching from English into Indonesian are fair with average score 2.2. The total of intransitive phrasal verbs is 17 with details: 2 sentences of accurate translation (12%); 1 sentence of inaccurate translation (6%); 14 sentences of less accurate (82%) while the readability level shows that there is 0 of readable translation; 15 less readable sentences (88%); 2 sentences not readable translation (12%).
Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk mengetahui peningkatan pemahaman masyarakat tentang mitigasi bencana tsunami melalui pemetaan jalur evakuasi dan sosialisasi kebencanaan. Kegiatan dilaksanakan di pekon Negeri Ratu Tenumbang kecamatan Pesisir Selatan kabupaten Pesisir Barat, yang merupakan zona merah desa rawan tsunami berdasarkan rilis BNPB. Pengabdian ini menggunakan metode Community Based Research dengan pendekatan kualitatif. Focus group discussion, kajian pustaka dan penyuluhan/ sosialisasi dilaksanakan dengan melibatkan beberapa pihak diantaranya yaitu tim pengabdian, BPBD Kabupaten Pesisir Barat dan pemerintah pekon Negeri Ratu Tenumbang beserta masyarakat. Kegiatan pengabdian ini terbagi menjadi dua tahap. Pertama, focus group discussion untuk memetakan jalur evakuasi kebencanaan dan sosialisasi untuk mengedukasi masyarakat terkait tanggap darurat bencana tsunami. Hasilnya, sinergi berbagai pihak telah berhasil membuat jalur evakuasi bencana tsunami. Selanjutnya, sosialisasi juga telah meningkatkan pemahaman masyarakat dalam mitigasi bencana tsunami dengan prosentase mencapai 96%. Community empowerment of Negeri Ratu Tenumbang village in realizing disaster response areas Abstract: This research aims to increase societies’ understanding of disaster mitigation of tsunami through mapping evacuation routes and disaster explanations. This research is implemented in Negeri Ratu Tenumbang village, sub-district of Pesisir Selatan and regency of Pesisir Barat Lampung. This village is a high prone to index level (red zone) tsunami disasters based on BNPB. This research applied community-based research with a qualitative approach. Focussed group discussion, literature review, and socialization involved the team of the research, BNPB Pesisir Barat, the government of Negeri Ratu Tenumbang, and societies are applied in this research. This research is held in two steps. Firstly, focused group discussion (FGD) is done to map and determine the evacuation path or route, and secondly socialization to educate the societies to face the tsunami disaster. The result of the research is created of the evacuation route of the tsunami disaster and societies’ understanding in disaster mitigation of tsunami.
Coronavirus spread around the world affects many things. Education is one of many affected sectors. Indonesia is a country which mostly effected by Coronavirus. Thousand students throughout the nations left the schools and start adapting a distance learning. It forces all teachers and students to learn and adapt to online learning. English teaching materials play a role in providing students with contextual knowledge. By far, English learning materials have only been inserted about moral values and other values. Though, English teaching materials are considered possible to be a means of learning students on issues related to disaster education. This research investigates the media platforms and materials used by English teachers during the pandemic in vocational high schools in East Lampung. The study used Cross-sectional Designs Survey with questionnaires as data collection techniques. Participants of 27 vocational schools of English teachers. The survey was done in the beginning of first semester. The aims are to know the materials and platforms which are used also to see the teachers’ understanding regarding the disaster education during a global pandemic. The findings gained are (1) Most teachers use WhatsApp in providing teaching materials. (2) The majority of respondents were aware of disaster education but only limited to COVID issues. (3) English teachers have not understood the overall disaster education. There are three main suggestions of this current work : Incorporating of teaching materials integrated with disaster education, environmental, and natural issues. Maximizing the fore on the application of online learning. Enhancing of disaster education at all levels of education.
Humans are social creatures who need other humans to fullfil their needs, communication and interaction have a crucial role to fullfil those needs. In order to the communication process can proceed smoothly, then at least human need to speak in polite in the communication. Religious norms and the community shows that politeness is necessary to properly maximized. Politeness in the relating of the Holy Qur'an about pronunciation, gestures and vocabulary was polite and adapted to the circumstances (environment). In social life, politeness is usually used to show respect for older people, but it would be better also if used against a fellow or a younger person. Politeness will minimize conflict and hostility. Because of it, the institution is one way of language education. STAIN Jurai Siwo Metro is an Islamic institution, that students have many educational backgrounds and is so different each other. Based on the mapping carried out showed that students of English Department Program, the majority coming from Senior High School (SMA). This study aims to determine the reality of politeness and influence of the educational background to the student politeness in English Study Program STAIN Jurai Siwo Metro. The method used in this research is quantitative descriptive, where interviews, observation and documentation used by researchers in collecting and obtaining data. From the data obtained show that the reality of politeness students have to realize elements of politeness. Furthermore, based on analysis of the data also showed that educational background gives affect student in politeness.
