Parents play a vital role in the lives of their children. Their role is considered difficult especially when it comes to single parenting, and even arduous if the child requires special needs. Generally, a single-parent family refers to a family where only one of the parents raises their children aged under 18 owing to personal choices, divorce, death of their significant other, or bearing a child out of wedlock. According to a report in the New York Times, about 15.9% of children in the industrialized world live in single-parent households comprising single mothers. About 70% of single-parent families constitute women and their biological children (Kotwal & Prabhakar, 2009). The prevalence of single mothers across the globe is increasing, owing to the rise in divorce rates, broken families and other crimes against women. In India, different studies have asserted that the phenomenon of single motherhood is on the rise (Panda, 2017).According to the United Nations (UN) Women Report titled 'Progress of the World's Women 2019-2020,' around 4.5% (equivalent to 13 million) of all Indian families are headed/run by single mothers (Pandit, 2019). Rearing a child tends to be the most challenging phase for a parent, particularly when done singlehandedly, and parenting becomes even more difficult if the child is born with special needs.
