Road Safety Audits have already been tightly incorporated in the road design process throughout the world. It has proven to be an effective way of increasing road safety without requiring many resources. The cost-benefit-ratios of Road Safety Audits in developed countries are rather high. In Lithuania, the procedure on Road Safety Audits is fairly new, and the direct links between different problems and their occurrence frequency throughout the years are yet to be determined. In this paper, several audits on road safety, performed between the years 2011 and 2017 by the Road Research Institute of Vilnius Gediminas Technical University, is analysed. The trends of most relevant problem types identified in those audits throughout the years for different types of roads and streets are presented. Based on those trends, the causes of some common problems are being recognised. Recommendations on possible solutions are suggested.
Pavements of aprons, container and logistic terminals, areas of storage, parking lots, areas of waste utilization are affected by high pressure static and impact loads. These loads strongly influence pavement performance by causing permanent deformations and distresses in the surface and even sometimes pavement failure in the beginning of pavement service. The types of structure, materials and layer thicknesses are the main factors relative to pavement performance. In order to correctly understand the particularity of static and impact loading, distresses of pavement structures affected by such load are emphasized, the load specification and climatic conditions influencing pavement performance are characterized. After analysis of the best practise, the flow chart of pavement structure design model was introduced. The paper gives reasonable pavement type and thickness determination dependent on object of application pavement structure.
Pavements of airdromes, ports and container terminals, logistics terminals, industrial areas, parking lots, waste recycling areas and etc. are affected by static and impact loads. These kinds of loading differ from typical loading of roads. Due to it, pavements affected by static and impact load are design by special models according to the main distresses – permanent deformations and thermal cracking. For this purpose, there are discussed characteristics conditioning performance of pavements affected by static and impact load.
The rapidly g rowing popularity of electric scooters in recent years has allowed the road user to choose another alternative mode of transportation. On the one hand, it is an ecological means of transportation in the city, allowing you to quickly reach your destination; on the other hand, it is a vehicle that causes risk to road safety. Although this is a fairly new mode of transport, it is already of great concern for road safety authorities. E-scooter accidents are recorded with all road users – pedestrians, bicyclists, motor vehicles, other e-scooter riders, or even alone. In this article, the analysis made according to the accident data of 2019–2020 showed that the highest number of accidents occurred between e-scooters and vehicles. Most e-scooter accidents with motor vehicles occur in the intersection zone or during a vehicle turning manoeuvre to (or from) side streets and exit lanes. A descriptive statistical analysis showed that the proportions of the distribution of road accidents between accident participants changed significantly during the analysis period – the number of road accidents between e-scooters and bicycles increased, while the number of accidents between e-scooters and pedestrians decreased. The road accidents between e-scooters and other vulnerable road users are usually caused by sudden, unexpected manoeuvring of road users. Identification of accident schemes and locations is an additional tool for traffic organisation specialists and road safety professionals to prevent accidents, injuries, and fatalities.
