The present study aims to investigate the motivational factors which are directly involved in learning English language among Bachelor of Science (B.S) first year undergraduate students of Institute of English Language and Literature, Shah Abdul Latif University, Khairpur, Sindh Pakistan. The study focuses on intrinsic and extrinsic motivation factors, which motivate students to learn English language. The questionnaire has been administered among students (N=70) which are based on 30 Likert scale items. Attitude Motivation Test Battery/AMTB (Gardner, 2004 English version) has been used in this regard. SPSS has been used to quantify the data. The semi-structured interview has been conducted by using purposive sampling for in-depth study from (N= 6) students. The results reveal that the students have extrinsic reasons as dominant factors for motivation to learn the target language. The dominant extrinsic factors which were investigated among the students are to get a good job and to qualify exams. The intrinsic factors such as learning English for developing self-image and communication skills in English with proficiency in their daily routine work are responsible for motivating students to learn English language.
This research paper aims at to describe the results of pilot study on “A cross sectional investigation of Science and Engineering undergraduates’ motivation towards learning English in Pakistanâ€. The results of this research probably are useful and beneficial in the sense to test the instrument proposed for current study in particular and to provide recommendations for full study in general. Moreover Mix method design both qualitative and quantitative has been proposed for full study. But in piloting study the researchers only administered survey questionnaire in order to test the instrument. The researchers consulted the various studies on learners’ motivational studies and used a modified questionnaire based on the Attitude Motivation Test Battery (AMTB) by Robert Gardner and the three stage model of Dorneyi. For the sampling researchers’ selected convenience random sampling taking the names form hat policy was adopted. Questionnaire was divided in three parts, Part one of the questionnaire contained informants’ demographic information. Second part of questionnaire contained ninety six closed ended items, and third part of the questionnaire contain three open ended questions. The population of this pilot study was Science and engineering students from Quaid-e-Awam University of Engineering and Technology. For reliability and validity check, all the data was interred in SPSS version 20 and cronbach’s Alpha reliability of questionnaire remained 0.920. This study intended to achieve the following aims and objectives (1) identify the motivational level of Science and Engineering undergraduates’ towards learning English language (2) Establish the factors that effects undergraduates’ motivation towards second language (L2) (3) Compare the motivational level between Science and Engineering undergraduates’ towards learning English language. In later section of paper, a complete visual illustration of demographic information of initial findings based on gender, mother tongue, origin, departments and institutional status is graphically presented. Finally, it is highly recommended from the results obtained from the pilot study that instrument used in this study is valid and reliable and can be confidently used for full study. Due to its excellent level of validity, reliability and suitability
The English language has been enjoying the status of an official, language of formal documentation and medium of teaching and learning in academic settings. The main object of the study was to find the factors to cause students' silence in English language (L2) classrooms at one of the Government Universities (CS 2nd year). Applying the qualitative real ethnographic research design; with effective classroom observations (using the observation sheet adopted from Jim King) and semi-structured interviews. The study analyzed that there are some notable learning factors, (such as anxiety, fear, lack of confidence, lack of L2 knowledge and L1 interference) that impact the student's participation in the L2 classroom resulting in silence. Such issues directly affect students' speaking proficiency, and confidence to talk and participate in activities in L2 classroom. The study will be helpful for teachers, curriculum designers and policymakers to overcome the factors causing silence.
The course of English for legal purposes has greatly received acceptance in Pakistan. The courses of ELP are not concerned to teach particular terms and phrases to translate texts with the teaching technique of the Grammar Translation method (GTM). Pakistan has been active in participating in International Relations. Therefore, it is significant to expect the attached course of ESP that could facilitate learners in preparation for their career in international outlook. Under this principle, the current theme of the paper is envisioned to give the layout of ELP courses that could tailor to the needs of law undergraduate students in Sindh Law College, Hyderabad. This course is proposed to design its foundation on content-based instruction. The issues are perceived through various angles in different ELP settings. The proposed plan for ELP courses is expected beneficial for teachers and students that are involved in the development of ELP courses in various renowned Universities in Pakistan.
