Background:Oral health plays an important role to maintain the general health. Therefore, controlling periodontal diseases may have a profound health effect. The importance of oral health is still a neglected and ignored social issue because most of the people are unaware of the relationship between oral health and systemic diseases. The aim of this study was to assess the knowledge and awareness of periodontal diseases among Jordan University of science and technology students.Materials and Methods:A cross-sectional study was conducted by distributing self-administered structured questionnaires to 906 university students between the ages of 18–30 years after obtaining their verbal consents. Results:A total of 906 students completed the questionnaire. Majority of students reported that they brush their teeth regularly while only 5.1% of students admitted that they never clean their teeth. Roughly one-quarter of students could define dental plaque correctly. A high “percentage” of females and medical students were more aware concerning gum inflammation signs and symptoms than males and students from faculties of engineering and science. Students of medical specialties and females were more aware of the relationship between smoking, diabetes mellitus, and heart diseases on the one hand and periodontal diseases on the other hand compared to opposite comparative groups. A low proportion of students were aware that proper scaling was not harmful to the teeth. Conclusions:In general, our study demonstrated that university students had poor knowledge regarding the etiology of periodontal diseases as well as the role of conventional treatment in maintaining good oral health by preventing the inflammatory process.
Several pulp therapies were developed to maintain the health and integrity of the teeth pulps because of their necessity for physiological growth of healthy permanent teeth with a long-term preserved function. Pulp therapies aims mainly at protecting the teeth that were affected by caries, infection, or trauma. Pulpotomy and pulpectomy are the most common utilized pulp therapies, and the choice between them depends on several factors, for instance, the vitality of the existing pulp, the portion of the pulp involved (e.g. coronal versus radicular portions), the presence or absence of reversible/irreversible pulpitis, the presence or absence of a necrotic pulp, the state of surrounding bones and soft tissues, and the presence or absence of infection, abscesses, fistulae, or underlying cysts. Basically, pulpotomy is usually therapy of option in patients with vital pulps, whilst pulpectomy is preferred in cases with non-vital teeth pulps. This article will review and summarize the main differences between pulpotomy and pulpectomy particularly regarding their definition, indications, techniques, and complications.
One of the recent advances in the field of dentistry is to provide prothesis that can replace lost natural teeth. Over several decades, researches were endeavouring to create dental implants with optimized criteria that allow long-term function and stability. After notable success, the use of dental implant has become an almost daily routine in dental practice. However, many factors can influence the success of dental implantation procedures. Primary implant stability remains the most reliable predictor of dental implants success, and many factors are known to have a considerable impact on the implant stability such as the thread morphology, the implant size and length, the implant body shape, the surgical technique use, and the underlying bone heath. Knowledge of these factors is essential for optimizing the outcome of dental implantation procedures even in unfavourable conditions. Therefore, this article aims at reviewing and discussing the various dental implants designs, characteristics, and stability.
scite is a Brooklyn-based organization that helps researchers better discover and understand research articles through Smart Citations–citations that display the context of the citation and describe whether the article provides supporting or contrasting evidence. scite is used by students and researchers from around the world and is funded in part by the National Science Foundation and the National Institute on Drug Abuse of the National Institutes of Health.
