Agent-based simulation can play a fundamental role for the development of military naval vessels as it can be exploited in the early design phase for the evaluation of ship efficiency in naval tasks. In this work, first three agent-based simulation environments are analyzed in order to show their main features and limitations in supporting the evaluation of the operational effectiveness of a military vessel in a reference naval task. The considered frameworks are MANA, NetLogo and Stage. Then, starting from the features highlighted by such an analysis, a new agent-based simulation framework for the operational evaluation of military naval tasks is proposed. Such framework, denoted as Operative Evaluator, has been developed in collaboration with Orizzonte Sistemi Navali, an Italian ship design company
This work presents a business intelligence tool for monitoring traffic accidents on motorways and supporting decisions relevant to road safety. The system manages information on road characteristics, traffic accidents and traffic volumes and produces reports for monitoring the evolution of key performance indicators for road safety, supporting decisions on actions for risk mitigation and safety improvements for road users. The paper illustrates the different types of analyses performed by the system. Pattern based analysis is used to evaluate safety performance indicators for the road sections matching defined patterns. Two different road segmentation algorithms, used to identify the most critical road sections according to various severity indicators, are presented and discussed. Differential analysis compares the value of selected severity indicators before and after the implementation of an intervention on a road. Finally, a graphical user interface allows the accident locations to be visualized and accidents with specific characteristics to be highlighted. The system was evaluated on the data collected between 2009 and 2011 for the A15 motorway in Italy, connecting Parma to La Spezia.
Abstract. This paper considers a system for supporting the multi-dimensional analysis of alternative configurations of military naval units, which is currently the object of a research and development project between Orizzonti Sistemi Navali, an Italian ship design company, and the University of Genova (Italy). The project aims at providing a decision making aid in the early phase of the vessels' design. In particular, the agent-based simulation framework included in such a system is presented and its characteristics are compared with a set of four existing frameworks, i.e, MANA, NetLogo, Stage and MASON. Agent-based simulation is specifically exploited in the early design phase for the evaluation of the vessel efficiency in a set of reference naval tasks. The comparison is performed considering a common reference scenario and a set of qualitative and quantitative key performance indicators. The results obtained show both the effectiveness and efficiency of the proposed agent-based simulation environment for the considered application case.
