SummaryThe May Revolution was quickly followed by massive and persistent warfare as the new regime struggled for survival. The revolutionary government had to face the daunting task of raising several regular armies on a very short notice. This paper deals with one critical aspect of the Junta's undertaking: the recruitment of a new officer corps that adequately reflected the new political and military situation. The paper argues that two different paths to the officer corps were allowed: one of social cooptation through the cadets' ranks and one of social promotion through the soldiers and sergeants ranks.
