This paper focuses on traditional transport as a form of cultural heritage in Central Europe, looking at the modes of transport that are still viable today as a part of people’s lives and livelihoods, as well as strategies to ensure their survival. The importance of preserving the original purpose of traditional transport modes, as well as their acquisition of new functions in the modern era, are examined in the context of the sustainability and viability of cultural heritage. The article also highlights crucial role of promoting the visibility of cultural phenomena to the public in encouraging their protection and ongoing sustainability. It also draws attention to some less positive examples of how forms of traditional transport are currently presented, examining approaches that may lead to the alteration of traditions and the construction of distorted images of cultural heritage. In the conclusion, I propose distinguishing between forms of traditional transport that continue to maintain people’s livelihoods or generate entertainment, and forms which are merely reconstructions of traditional phenomena, intended only as imitations to recall the past
The study deals with the transformation and current form of wheelwrighting in three Central European countries - the Czech Republic, Poland, and Slovakia. The introductory section informs about the research on the theme in the above territory, and using the example of the range of products, manufacturing technology and producers, it points out that traditional crafts can exist even today without maintaining their viability artificially. However, the text also takes into consideration how the craft has developed recently, and while evaluating its viability the author argues that the sustainability of wheelwrighting is affected not only by the economic purpose, but it is also its entertaining and tourist role and the nostalgia that begin to prove successful in addition to the former purely financial aspect. The original financial aspect shifts from the use of the wheelwright´s products for transport and livelihood to the modern use of tradition and heritage concept in business, especially in emphasizing the symbolic value of the products of traditional craftsmanship for both the producer and the consumer. Moreover, it is not only the vision of economic profit but also the element of remembering and evoking the past that are being pursued. Institutional protection of wheelwright's trade is equally important for the existence and sustainability of the craft.
This article examines city bus drivers’ behaviour, culture, and daily life in their work environment – particularly their mutual communication, relationships between drivers and passengers, issues faced, and feelings experienced by city bus drivers when performing their job. I present data through autoethnographic testimony depicting my personal experience as an anthropologist-bus driver in Prague. The terrain showed that autoethnography is a crucial research tool for obtaining otherwise difficult-to-access data in the urban environment of occupational culture. I argue that to obtain valid information, it is possible to become members of the researched community and try to think like them. To avoid excessive subjectivity, rather than engaging in collaborative autoethnography, I rather propose contextualizing personal testimony within scholarly literature as well as the experiences of co-workers gained through interviews conducted from the position of a non-researcher.
