Introduction Home confinement during the COVID-19 pandemic reduced the physical activity level and exacerbated other unhealthy behaviours such as vices and eating disorders. This study analyses the risk factors predisposing to weight gain in young adults during COVID-19 home confinement. Material and method Four hundred thirty-three students, aged between 19 and 25, participated in an online survey to understand the factors associated with weight gain. The following lifestyle dimensions were investigated in a regression model: physical activity, personal experiences, occupation, risk of vices. Results We have found significant associations between weight gain (as a dependent variable), and frequency of physical activity (p = 0.009), occupational performance (p = 0.002), and alcohol consumption (p = 0.002). Male respondents are more likely to have gained weight during isolation. For an increase of one unit in the frequency of playing sports, we expect an odd of 0.25 (p = 0.048) for the respondents’ weight loss. Moreover, if the occupational performance increases by one unit, a weight decrease by a rate of 0.52 (p =0.02) is expected. Conclusion In conclusion, young adults less engaged in physical activity, who assessed their occupational performance as lower, and who consumed alcohol more often during home confinement are the most likely to have gained weight.
Introduction: The blood flow restriction method is a training method that is based on the partial occlusion of circulation during a workout. This technique combines low-intensity exercise with the occlusion of the bloodstream which produces results similar to high-intensity training.Aim: We aimed to identify the areas in which this method is applicable, its potential benefits and effects, recommendations regarding the rules of use for maximal effects (dosage, intensity, etc.), and also possible contraindications or warnings regarding the use of this method.Methods: We have analyzed a number of 20 articles on this topic from the field literature of the last 10 years, using ”google academic” as a search engine.Results: After this study we concluded that blood flow restriction is a method with wide applicability in the field of sports training, but also in the recovery process; however, it requires attention in choosing the necessary equipment. For healthy individuals, best training adaptations occur when combining low-load blood flow restriction resistance exercise with traditional high-load resistance exercise.Conclusion: Low-intensity resistance exercise with blood flow restriction is as effective as high-intensity training (for strength and muscle mass gains), but only the high-intensity protocol promotes significant hypotensive responses after exercise.
Introduction: The bio-banding (BB) concept refers to the practice of grouping athletes based on attributes associated with growth and maturation instead of chronological age. Lately, the advantages and disadvantages of bio-banding are widely debated in the world of sports. Supporters of this method consider that this is a more correct way of grouping athletes giving greater equality in selection, training, and competition and so, decreasing the risk of injury. This paperaims to increase awareness and interest in bio-banding and for this reason, we analyzed the existent evidence on this topic to highlight the benefits, implications, limitations, importance, and impediments when it comes to applying it in the sports field.Methods: For the literature review, we used Google Academic as a search engine and bio-banding as the main keyword. We chose to document this concept only regarding boys because approaching both genders is much more complex if we take into account the differences in terms of growth and maturation. To have a clear line of research, we chose to study this concept in terms of applicability in football, being a sport that is highly popular in our country.Results: After the primary analysis we selected a total of 20 relevant studies that were analyzed and discussed to establish and highlight the advantages and disadvantages of this method of selection and grouping in sports.Conclusion: Bio-banding can be a missing jigsaw of the training for youth athletes but further longitudinal studies are needed in order to clarify the advantages of bio-banding use.
