The Atomic Energy Connnission's program of atmospheric radioactivity and fallout research is the responsibility of the Division of Biology andMedicine. This program is concerned with the fate of radioactivity injected into the atmosphere and its effects on man (1, 2 ) . As implied in the term "fallout", the program deals with a wide range of nuclear energy activities, including both military and peaceful applications.The main purpose of the research program i s to provide an increasingly complete and sound scientific basis for the prediction of radiation doses to man which may result from the introduction of radioactive material into the atmosphere.

Actually, this was the date President Truman announced the explosion, which had occurred a few weeks earlier.But it is likely that only the specialist will be annoyed by such trivia. Some parts of the book have been extracted in the first two issues of Sputnik, the new Soviet English-language digest. But the book itself deserves an English edition. Or perhaps some bold soul will attempt a more definitive biography, contrasting and comparing this extraordinary scientist-administrator with his peers elsewhere.
