When power is extracted from a heat engine the working fluid must move. The generation of this motion consumes part of the engine power so that the efficiency is reduced. The energy loss per cycle is proportional to the maximum kinetic energy imparted to the working fluid and it is independent of the thermodynamic process. The power loss is proportional to the cube of the engine frequency.
scite is a Brooklyn-based organization that helps researchers better discover and understand research articles through Smart Citations–citations that display the context of the citation and describe whether the article provides supporting or contrasting evidence. scite is used by students and researchers from around the world and is funded in part by the National Science Foundation and the National Institute on Drug Abuse of the National Institutes of Health.
