This article describes the emergence of collaborative work between researchers and information professionals through the presentation of two tools developed within Cemagref. T he first tool is a traditional database and the second a Wiki; they were both implemented by information professionals with the contribution of information technology (IT) experts. The role of Cemagref information professionals is to provide researchers with expertise on information technology. The first task of the ten Cemagref documentation departments is to supply our researchers with suitable data. This paper develops this experience through the description of two existing systems. Not only can researchers now retrieve information, but they are also able to feed the databases with their own information.
PurposeThis paper aims to analyze the pertinence of Bradford's law applied to a set of electronic periodical collections in a given discipline.Design/methodology/approachThis study applied Bradford's law using citations rather than articles from a theme, thus ensuring the pertinence of the periodicals cited. Concentrating on citations in articles focuses on the stage following research rather than prior stages. The sources are actually used because they have been cited.FindingsThe study demonstrates the data centrality phenomenon based on the leading periodicals in a theme. There was a relationship between the electronic periodical collection and the number of citations in the relevant journals in a theme.Originality/valueAlthough today's use of periodical titles is defined first and foremost by readership statistics, a more detailed analysis on the qualitative aspect can be an additional benefit in the negotiations conducted on a macro scale. Using Bradford's law could be envisaged as a complementary tool for a sustainable management of commercial electronic resources.
(Executive Summary for JITE)FragforNET is a North-South network platform to communicate, disseminate and archive information and knowledge on forest fragmentation and biodiversity loss http://fragfornet.grenoble.cemagref.fr/. This network intends to become a portal for researchers, stakeholders, policy makers and the public to exchange ideas, knowledge, data, experiences and results on the loss on biodiversity in the remaining native forests of South America. The activities in relation to the spread of information and access to documentation focus on two main aspects: development of information access and communication tools and enhancement of the identification of Documentary Centre's and specialised libraries by the creation of a common directory. Actions are being done to contribute to an information portal in relation to forest conservation.
Informing Science is a young transdisciplinary science. the essential characteristics of which were defined fifteen years ago.The journal Informing Science: the International Journal of an Emerging Transdiscipline (InformSciJ) is the flagship journal of transdisciplinary Informing Science. A study about the publication's influence and readership could be pertinent to better understanding the present state of Informing Science. To this end, we have performed a bibliometric study of first generation citations from InformSciJ. Publication data from Scopus were used. A bibliometric analysis based on citations to its papers may give clear indicators about the influence of this journal among institutions, countries, and researchers. This study also provides an overview of knowledge dissemination in various disciplines. Moreover, a citations study may be a barometer of the evolution of a transdiscipline. The study demonstrates the high degree of transdisciplinarity of Informing Science. It is also confirmed that after more than a decade the Informing Science Institute continues to bring together researchers working in IS from many disciplines and nations. The study confirms that it is possible to observe the evolution of a new transdiscipline by analysing the citations to papers from its flagship journal.
