We design structures with switchable, narrowband thermal absorption peaks, based on metallic gratings incorporating phase-change materials. An insulator-to-metal phase transition in vanadium dioxide is used to turn the coupling between a surface plasmon mode and a normally incident electromagnetic wave on and off. We analyze the limits on absorptive switching within the framework of coupled-mode theory, in order to evaluate the optimality of specific designs.
scite is a Brooklyn-based organization that helps researchers better discover and understand research articles through Smart Citations–citations that display the context of the citation and describe whether the article provides supporting or contrasting evidence. scite is used by students and researchers from around the world and is funded in part by the National Science Foundation and the National Institute on Drug Abuse of the National Institutes of Health.
