The paper presents the concept of hazardous confined space by identifying hazards in closed areas, with special emphasis on dangerous gases commonly found there, and occupational safetymeasures that involve: testing the air, cleaning and ventilation, separating enclosed spaces, personal protections, entry control, blocking mobile device and rescuing casualties. For only 8 years in America, there has been an average of 89 work-related deaths in confined spaces per year, and approximately 23 (25.5%) of those who died were persons attempting rescue. Asphyxiation by gases was the primary cause of death. The persons who were participating in rescue were in most cases co-workers, not or emergency medical service personnel. Since rescue operations in confined spaces are unique hazards, proper training of personnel and the availability of specialized equipment are required to protect persons attempting rescue from injury and death. Emergency medical service personnel should be familiar with all potential threats and rescue techniques in confined space. Analogously, the paper describes all the potential dangers and hazards of indoor space. Key words: hazardous confined spaces, occupational safety.
Drinking water quality has a direct impact on the health of the population and is the main indicator of environmental sanitation and hygienic living conditions. The aim of this study was to investigate the quality of drinking water from three water supply systems in Serbia. The retrospective descriptive study was done covering the period between 2011 and 2015. We collected data from control water supply systems in three towns and tested the samples as required by the Regulation on the Hygienic Acceptability of Potable Water. The following indicators of water security were analyzed: ammonia, nitrates, nitrites, consumption of potassium permanganate, organic matter content, pH and electroconductivity. The microbiological quality was determined by analyzing the indicators of fecal contamination, Escherichia coli, Enterococci and Salmonellae, using the membrane filtration method. The most frequent parameters of physical-chemical insecurity of water were a high concentration of ammonia, lower pH levels, and increased consumption of potassium permanganate. The most common detected microbes were aerobic mesophilic bacteria which are not significant from the aspect of human health. These results showed that drinking water could pose a potential risk to local consumers.
An integrated management system refers to the application of several different international standards, and it contributes to efficient and effective organizational management. The Quality Standards were first developed at the end of the twentieth century; however, due to social, political and many other reasons, the The International Organization for Standardization has also developed standards related to occupational health and safety, environmental protection, information security, risk management, energy efficiency, etc. Since all of these standards are process-oriented, there is an emerging need to simplify their implementation. Similarly, valid versions of ISO 9001, ISO 14001 and ISO 45001 standards identical in structure have been adopted in the last five years, which facilitated their integrated implementation and application. This paper describes a concept of integrated management system through a standardized safety management system.
Angiogenesis is essential for tumor growth and relies on the production of angiogenic factors. By comparative analysis using RT-PCR method of angiogenic growth factors: VEGF, bFGF, PDGF-A, angiogenin- 1 and IL-8 we established the level of expression of these genes necessary for angiogenesis in glioma and neuroblastoma cell lines. Our analyses were also extended to CD44 gene, which plays an important role in cascade of metastasis and progression of brain tumors. Significant differences in the level of gene expression of angiogenic factors and CD44 gene between the two cell lines observed throughout this study can be used as a prognostic marker for predicting clinical outcome in human brain tumors at the time of the initial staging.
scite is a Brooklyn-based organization that helps researchers better discover and understand research articles through Smart Citations–citations that display the context of the citation and describe whether the article provides supporting or contrasting evidence. scite is used by students and researchers from around the world and is funded in part by the National Science Foundation and the National Institute on Drug Abuse of the National Institutes of Health.
