Despite astonishing price appreciation in recent years, cryptocurrencies have been subjected to accusations of pricing bubbles central to the trilemma that exists between regulatory oversight, the potential for illicit use through its anonymity within a young underdeveloped exchange system, and infrastructural breaches influenced by the growth of cybercriminality. Each influence the perception of the role of cryptocurrencies as a credible investment asset class and legitimate of value.

Bitcoin has received enormous attention both by the media and investors alike. But why has Bitcoin received such attention? This paper answers this question by examining the relationship between investor attention and Bitcoin fundamentals and finds that realized volatility and volume are both significant drivers of next day attention of Bitcoin.
