Can greater progress be made in the establishment, maintenance, and growth of peace studies programs with the development of one reigning paradigm? This paper will present an argument in favor of consensus around one paradigm for the purpose of legitimizing peace studies in academia. We will examine the paradigm concept, an indication of differing views on paradigms, and the paradigms implicit in the existing Ph.D. programs in the peace and conflict field at Cornell, Syracuse, and the University of Pennsylvania.
