Men and women present differences that go beyond evolutionary mechanisms of reproduction and species maintenance; social and cultural dimensions are indicated as modeling agents of different configurations of romantic relationships. This study presents the results of relationship quality models based on Sternberg’s triangular love theory. There were 335 subjects involved in romantic relationships, of whom 190 (56.7%) were male and 145 (42.3%) were female. Mean age of the participants was 29 years (SD = 9.1 years). The results of the study point out that love components predict relationship satisfaction differently per gender. For women, the intimacy, passion and commitment variables are significant predictors, whereas for men the commitment variable was not significant.
This study aimed to find validity evidence of different versions of the Revised Adult Attachment Scale (RAAS) that measures adult attachment style and have been translated into Portuguese, in order to obtain a final version of the instrument for application in a Brazilian sample. We used the original version of the RAAS and its recent variations. Four independent studies were held, with a total of 1436 participants, mostly young adults from the states of São Paulo and Bahia. Exploratory and confirmatory analyses corroborated the validity of the three-factor structure (secure, anxious and avoidant) from the scale, with satisfactory indexes for Brazilian data. We found differences in frequency of attachment styles between sexes, confirming evolutionary hypotheses of intersexual variation. The scales showed satisfactory evidence of validity, and it is advised to use its latest version to measure adult attachment.
The aim of this study was to examine evidence of validity for the Brazilian version of the Scale of Family Unpredictability during childhood. A total of 740 people participated in the study. The first sample was composed of 121 women over 40 years of age (Xage= 5.86), 157 adults in conflict with the law (148 men, Xage= 34.20), and 251 college students (122 men,Xage= 19.60). The second sample included 211 college students (90 men, Xage= 21.53). Exploratory and confirmatory analysis indicated that the three-dimensional model (nurturance, money, meals) presented a better goodness of fit, with satisfactory reliability indexes. A significant effect of all unpredictability factors on the purchasing power of the participants was found, confirming validity by contrasting groups of EIFI: people belonging to socioeconomic classes with lower purchasing power presented higher family unpredictability during childhood. We concluded that the three-dimensional EIFI is psychometrically adequate, allowing the differentiation of groups in the constructs evaluated.
AbstractThis study aimed to construct and validate a psychological measure called Family Unpredictability Scale in Childhood for the Brazilian population. The study included 394 people: 158 adults in conflict with the law that had already been in prison (M=34.23 years; SD=10.17), 122 college students (M=19.26; SD=2.06), and 114 women above 40 years old and, at least, high school schooling (M=51.19; SD=8.64). Procedures of content, face and construct validity were conducted. The factor analysis generated an instrument structured in four dimensions (care/support, financial resources, food and discipline) with satisfactory reliability indexes for all of them. It was concluded that Family Unpredictability Scale in Childhood was validated to Brazilian population and that it can be used as an instrument to measure family unpredictability in childhood on the national scene.
