Cauda equina syndrome (CES) is a well-recognized and potentially serious, though rare, neurological complication of spinal anesthesia. It presumably results from injury to the sacral roots in the spinal canal, which can also cause bilateral radiculopathy and progressive neurological deficits in the legs.
