Curationis 28(3): 39-46The aim o f the study was to determine whether physicians in a private sector setting verbally abuse nurses, and to what extent. A review o f the literature showed that verbal abuse by physicians accounts for the highest incidence o f aggression towards nurses in health care, and that it is strongly related to turnover rates. It has also been reported in recent studies that within the context of verbally abusive episodes, patient care, work productivity, morale and jo b satisfaction have been negatively affected. O f the 120 questionnaires that were distributed among registered and enrolled nurses, 83 were returned in time to be used, which was a response rate of 69%. This response rate is consistent with previous studies and is exactly the same as for a study that was done in Turkey (Uzun, 2003:81). The questionnaire used was one that has been adapted from the Verbal Abuse Scale developed by Manderino and Berkey (1997:50) and the Revised Conflict Tactics Scale (CTS 2) as described by Little (1999:24), and was in the form of a 4-point Likert-scale with one open ended question. The results showed that 79% o f the nurses admitted that verbal abuse was taking place. Forms of direct verbal abuse included 81 % that felt they were criticised unjustly, 76% that were screamed at in front of others, and 81 % that felt physicians vented their frustration on them. The results obtained in the study w ere consistent with previous studies done elsewhere and it indicated that nurses still experience high levels of verbal abuse in the workplace.
This study identified statewide variation in implementation of wraparound for children on the severe emotional disturbance (SED) Waiver in Kansas. SED Waivers allow Community Mental Health Centers (CMHC) to offer an array of community-based services to high risk youth. Qualitative methods, including interviews, reviews of charts and billing records, and a survey, were employed. Stratified random sampling was used to select seven CMHCs, and random sampling was used to select individual cases for interviews. Although CMHCs shared similar wraparound philosophy and service initiation processes, each developed their own localized wraparound model within the confines of Medicaid eligibility and documentation rules. Eight models for wraparound team composition were identified. Findings demonstrate implementation of wraparound with fidelity to a central model is difficult on a large scale. The balance of standardized wraparound practices, localized innovations, and agency compliance with Medicaid is essential for optimizing children's mental health services.
The purpose of this pilot study was to explore social media usage among incarcerated women in a modified therapeutic community. An author-developed social media questionnaire was administered to 89 incarcerated women. Participants reported high levels of social media usage, and many had used social media to engage in criminal behavior. Although most of the women identified seeing pictures of friends actively using substances on social media as a trigger for relapse, they still planned to reactive their social media accounts upon release. The role and power of social media in these women’s lives must be understood and planned for in prison-based treatment programs.
This article presents findings on clinical gains for youth in psychiatric residential treatment facilities (PRTF) through the use of state-wide performance management information. Data was collected on 1,258 youth admitted to one of seventeen PRTF facilities in a single, mid-western state. Results suggest that youth made positive clinical changes during treatment. Furthermore, results indicate that parent and youth hopefulness and satisfaction were significant predictors of positive clinical changes in problem severity and youth functioning. These findings contribute to current literature on PRTF effectiveness in achieving positive youth outcomes and the role of consumer attitudinal factors in treatment.
