C ancellation (or deferral) of outpatient surgery occurs because of a variety of reasons and results in a delay in treatment but is sometimes necessary to provide optimal patient care. By understanding the reasons for cancellation of Mohs micrographic surgery (MMS), Mohs surgeons can implement steps to avoid cancellation and increase availability of this technique to more patients.
MethodsWe performed a retrospective observational study of patients who presented for MMS from January 1, 2019, to December 31, 2019, with 1 Mohs surgeon (H.T.G.) at a tertiary care clinic. This preceded the first reported COVID-19 case in the United States on January 19, 2020. 1 Two thousand three hundred sixty-five MMS were performed by HTG in 2019. Patients who did not ultimately have MMS performed on the lesion for which they were scheduled that day were considered "cancellations."There were 143 cancelled procedures, representing 187 total lesions; the first 297 completed procedures in 2019 were used as a control group, representing 312 total lesions. Reasons for cancellation were descriptively categorized into groups. Chi-square tests were conducted to compare tumor type/subtype, tumor aggressiveness, and anatomic location between cancelled and completed procedures. We used R v. 4.0.3 to conduct all analyses.
