ABSTRACT… Objectives:To determine the prevalence of pre diabetes in students of Ayub Medical College and associated risk factors. Study Design: Prospective study. Period: Jan 2016 to Jun 2016. Setting: Ayub Medical College. Materials and Methodology: 130 students participated after simple random sampling technique. Different variables were studied and initially were entered on a pre-formed proforma and then SPSS 17.0 version were used for data analysis. Results: 15(11.54%) of the students were suffering from pre diabetes. Among them 11(8.46%) were males while 4(3.07%) were females. 50 (38.46%) students had a positive family history of diabetes whereas 80 (61.54%) had no family history. 111(85.38%) of the students in study were non-smokers and Only 40(30.77%) students were doing regular exercise. Conclusion: A significant prevalence of pre-diabetes in young adults is a matter of concern therefore all young adults need to be targeted for screening of pre diabetes and lifestyle modification.
Objective: To determine the frequency of Right Ventricle infarction and in-hospital outcome after primary percutaneous coronary intervention in patients with acute inferior MI. Study Design: Descriptive Cross Sectional Study. Place and Duration of Study: Armed Forces Institute of Cardiology/National Institute of Heart Diseases, from Dec 2018 to Jun, 2019. Methodology: Non-probability consecutive sampling technique was used. Permission was sought from hospital ethical committee and informed consent was taken from participants of the study. Patients presenting with acute inferior MI who underwent Primary Percutaneous Coronary Intervention were assessed for presence of Right Ventricle infarct. All the patients’ data and variables of the study was recorded in the data collection sheet. Patients underwent venous blood sampling for Complete blood count, Renal function tests, Liver function tests, Blood glucose random, Troponin-I, cardiac enzymes and Coagulation profile at presentation in emergency department. Results: Total 261 patients were included according to the inclusion criteria of the study. Mean age (years) in the study was 58.0 ± 12.59 whereas there were 183 (70.1) male and 78 (29.9) female patients who were included in the study. Frequency of right ventricular infarction and in-hospital outcome (mortality) after Primary Percutaneous Coronary Intervention in patients with acute inferior MI was assessed in the study which was 73 (28.0) and 20 (7.7) respectively. Conclusion: The study concluded that frequency of in-hospital mortality is substantial due to major adverse cardiac events in patients with right ventricle infarction.
Objective: To determine the frequency of right ventricular infarction among patients with acute inferior wall myocardial infarction. Study Design: Descriptive cross sectional study. Place and Duration of Study: Ayub Teaching Hospital, Abbottabad from, Jan 2017 to Sep 2017. Methodology: A total of 163 patients aged 18-75 years and admitted to coronary care unit (CCU) with first attack of acute inferior wall myocardial infarction, were recruited through non probability purposive sampling. Electrocardiogram and Echo were performed of all patients and their findings were noted for the frequency of right ventricular infarction in acute inferior wall myocardial infarction. Results: There were 117 (72%) males and 46 (28%) females. Patients were stratified according to their age in four groups i.e. 13 (8%) patients were less than 40 years of age, 26 (16%) patients were aged between 41 and 50 years, 46 (28%) patients were aged between 51 and 60 years of age and 78 (48%) patients were above 60 years of age. Mean ± SD was 60 ± 1.28. Out of 163 patients, 44 (27%) had right ventricular infarction while 119 (73%) did not have right ventricular infarction. Conclusion: The frequency of right ventricular infraction among patients presenting with acute inferior wall myocardial infarction was 27%.
Objective: To determine the frequency of acute kidney injury among patients undergoing coronary angiography. Study Design: Descriptive cross-sectional study. Place and Duration of Study: Department of Cardiology, Hayatabad Medical Complex, Peshawar, from Jan 2018 to Jul 2018. Methodology: This study was conducted in the in the Department of Cardiology, Hayatabad Medical Complex, Peshawar from 22nd Jan 2018 to 22nd Jul 2018. Through a descriptive cross-sectional study design, a total of 116 patients scheduled for coronary angiography were included in the study in a consecutive manner and baseline / follow up serum creatinine was recorded to detect acute kidney injury. Results: In this study 116 patients were included, 61.2% males and 38.8% females. Mean age of the patients was 55.6 years with a standard deviation of 6.6 years. Mean baseline serum creatinine level was 0.9 ± 0.11mg/dl which was 1.5 ± 0.11 48 hours after coronary angiography (p 0.000). AKI was recorded in 19.8% of patients. Conclusion: Acute kidney injury after coronary angiography is not uncommon in our population. More studies are recommended on its risk factors and complications to draw future directions for its control and prevention.
