The coronavirus COVID-19 outbreak and its immediate impact on all aspects of
human life have changed the way we use public space in our cities. People have
been forced to adopt social isolation measures and wear masks. Street life has
ground to a halt and public transport use has plummeted, while social facilities
such as restaurants, clubs and cinemas have been closed. The relationship
between private and public space has been reversed: public space has become
deserted while private space, one of luxury, has been available only to the
richest. The behaviour and interactions between people in public space have
also changed. The paper analyses the above phenomena and raises questions
about the future of metropolitan public spaces after the COVID-19 pandemic.
Quantum scattering calculations for all but low-dimensional systems at low energies must rely on approximations. All approximations introduce errors. The impact of these errors is often difficult to assess because they depend on the Hamiltonian parameters and the particular observable under study. Here, we illustrate a general, system-and approximation-independent, approach to improve the accuracy of quantum dynamics approximations. The method is based on a Bayesian machine learning (BML) algorithm that is trained by a small number of exact results and a large number of approximate calculations, resulting in ML models that can generalize exact quantum results to different dynamical processes. Thus, a ML model trained by a combination of approximate and rigorous results for a certain inelastic transition can make accurate predictions for different transitions without rigorous calculations. This opens the possibility of improving the accuracy of approximate calculations for quantum transitions that are out of reach of exact scattering theory.
The article discusses the architectural tradition of mombasa, a port city in east africa. starting from the 10th century aD, mombasa was an important trade centre of the swahili culture, which developed its own language, art, crafts and architecture, drawing on arabic, Persian and Indian influences. mombasa is currently undergoing strong urbanisation processes, which lead to its rapid expansion, spatial chaos and urban poverty. The local authorities facing these problems decided to improve the tourist appeal of the city through initiatives to make it cleaner and enhance its aesthetic values. In 2018, an administrative decree was issued that required the façades of downtown buildings to be painted blue and white. as a result, mombasa became the most frequently photographed city in africa.
scite is a Brooklyn-based organization that helps researchers better discover and understand research articles through Smart Citations–citations that display the context of the citation and describe whether the article provides supporting or contrasting evidence. scite is used by students and researchers from around the world and is funded in part by the National Science Foundation and the National Institute on Drug Abuse of the National Institutes of Health.
