Abstract. This study examines problem of the management of design changes caused by the complexity of the design process and the lack of knowledge of all aspects of the design dependencies. This paper addresses the subject of design changes management in the context of a multidisciplinary collaborative environment of Building Information Modelling (BIM). Due to evolving role of BIM in designing of building projects and the increasing complexity of the design process a need to develop change management based on BIM methodology aroused. The application of BIM to construction projects has the potential to enhance the quality of information provided for making critical design decisions. Trusted change propagation is the key for successful change management. Paper describes developed method to predict the propagation of change through the building information model and provides the concept of visual technology to help designers to predict the change in the construction industry. The developed method includes the use of parameter-based Design Structure Matrix (DSM) as a tool for predicting change propagation. The novelty of research is the proposed integration of DSM with BIM to support the visual representation of predicting change within BIM. Case study demonstrates the possibilities of method in BIM environment.
The implementation of sustainable solutions in the design of buildings is one of the main elements in achieving the transition to sustainability. The variety of structural elements and availability of sustainable materials, and the different preferences of clients, architects, and structural designers make the decision-making process difficult. This research aims to develop a decision model for applying to the early design stage. This work evaluates the sustainability of the load-bearing structures of a commercial building. Three types of load-bearing structures have been selected and compared concerning different physical parameters, cost of construction, cost of materials, technological dimensions (duration expressed in person-hours and machine-hours), and environmental impact. The methodology combines the building information modeling, sustainability criteria, and multi-criteria decision-aiding methods. The presented case study illustrates the proposed approach. The study revealed that multi-criteria decision aiding methods give the possibility to improve the selection process and to assess the sustainability of alternative structural solutions at an early stage of building design. The proposed decision model is versatile and therefore can be applied for different cases.
The article presents the results of the survey aimed to analyze the attitude and perceptions regarding the use of BIM for data handling and analysis. Two target groups were researched, according to the role they play in building processes, namely public administrations (including tenants, owners, and building administrators) and Professionals (engineers / architects). The study conducted during the Net-UBIEP (Network for Using BIM to Increase the Energy Performance) project. The purpose of this study was to assess the implementation of building information modeling (BIM) as a tool and a process among key stakeholders in order to understand the current use of BIM, benefits of using BIM, obstacles of using BIM as well as possible future use. This study can be used as a pre-analysis of feedback from building users and construction professionals and can contribute to the co-adaptation process between BIM knowledge providers and BIM users.
Building Information Modelling (BIM) is becoming a common language for the construction of buildings and infrastructure sectors worldwide. This paper aims at providing a broad picture of published journal papers on BIM application in infrastructure projects. The review is based on bibliometric analysis of 239 papers. The bibliometric analysis technique is used as the analysis method, which when compared to conventional literature reviews allows for the reduction in the likelihood of subjective judgments. The paper presents the review of BIM applications in infrastructure projects analysed within a 10-year period; the analysis of most recent studies and trends of applying BIM methodology identifies the gaps of BIM applications in infrastructure projects and defines future areas of research. Detailed analyses of citation networks present the co-occurrence map of keywords, citation patterns of journals, articles and the most cited journals in the research area. Research shows that BIM applications in infrastructure projects have been continuously growing with a sudden increase after 2016. The study reveals that the research in this area conducted mainly in isolation comprised disjointed and fragmented research studies. Some of the sources are not available in scientific databases.
The article proposes a system of indicators to measure the performance of BIM (Building Information Modelling) projects. Proposed indicators divided into two groups: quantitative (cost and time related numerical values) and qualitative (verbally expressed measures recalculated to scores according to proposed four-point rating scale). The metrics include the calculation of time and cost variations, the assessment of the organizational scale of BIM deployment, BIM competency granularity level, BIM capability level, BIM maturity level. In the case study, the proposed indicators applied for the evaluation of the results of the real construction project. The limitations and difficulties faced up during the project implementation discussed, and the benefits of the application of the BIM methodology revealed. The application of the proposed methodology is useful in assessing, at which level the BIM applied in construction projects and measuring the progress towards achieving project goals. The proposed methodology may also be useful for constant monitoring of the BIM implementation in construction projects.
scite is a Brooklyn-based organization that helps researchers better discover and understand research articles through Smart Citations–citations that display the context of the citation and describe whether the article provides supporting or contrasting evidence. scite is used by students and researchers from around the world and is funded in part by the National Science Foundation and the National Institute on Drug Abuse of the National Institutes of Health.
