This paper explores how urban regeneration strategies, focused on increasing the social, economic and spatial values of old industrialized areas, are being experienced in Turkey. It examines the brownfield regeneration process in five old industrial sites in one of Turkey's earliest industrialized cities, Eskis¸ehir. The examples described are evaluated based on the sustainability objectives of brownfield development. The aim is to investigate the potential of these cases of brownfield regeneration to secure land for sustainable urban development. The conclusions suggest that local experience in the re-use of old industrial buildings and sites provides valuable input to the development of urban development policies. Greater attention to sustainable outcomes could add a new and vital dimension to brownfield regeneration. Cases of brownfield regeneration in one of Turkey's earliest industrialized cities, Eskis¸ehir, are analyzed in terms of sustainability objectives adapted and developed from the research of Williams and Dair.(1) The aim is to investigate the potential of these brownfield regeneration projects to secure land for sustainable urban development, and to discuss the implications for sustainable brownfield regeneration in cities in Turkey that are faced with rapid urbanization.The process of industrial change has resulted in the creation of socalled "brownfields" across Europe, particularly in urban areas. Taking into account the ongoing need for open space for housing, retail and industry, the organization RESCUE (Regeneration of European Sites in Cities and Urban Environments) argues that a sustainable built environment cannot be achieved without reintegrating derelict land into the property markets and encouraging development back into central urban locations.

This paper presents a participatory governance model adopted in Bursa, Turkey, and discusses the challenges and successes experienced to date in applying this model. The principle objectives of The Living Ottoman Village in the Third Millennium -Cumalıkızık Collaboration Project are to promote, at national and international level, high standards of quality in the fi elds of heritage conservation, architecture, urban and rural planning and to advocate for the sustainable development of the urban and rural, built and natural environments, with a participatory approach. The model puts heritage and its benefi ts in the mainstream of public consciousness and attempts to make heritage a priority for public policies. Our aim is to present the Cumalıkızık Collaboration Project, whose objective is to achieve not only the conservation and revitalization of the historical settlement but also the sustainable development of the village. Thus, it can be an important example for similar settlements.

There is a continual need for dwellings through which people can integrate their own values, form social links, and become anchored in a positive way. To meet this vital need, sustainability should be a core dimension of housing quality and be central to the development process as a whole. On the other hand, cities clearly appear to be the most important location for action to help the goals of the sustainable development. In this context, the purpose of this paper is to highlight the potential of historic cities and their traditional housing areas to achieve urban sustainability, in the context of compact city form. It consists of four sections with a brief introduction on the critical role of cities for sustainability. The first section highlights the importance of traditional housing areas for urban sustainability. The second section covers an evaluation of the suitability of the compact city form for historic neighbourhoods, through empirical studies undertaken in Bursa. The theoretical approach is based on the transactional perspective, which considers home and home environments as a transactional whole that defines and is defined by a range of cultural, social and psychological factors. Observational and ethnographic research methods are used together with the surveys applied in a valuable traditional neighbourhood in the city of Bursa, one of the most important historic cities of a developing country, Turkey. The paper concludes with the findings of the case study to offer some proposals for policy principles of sustainable urban development in historic cities.

Today, many studies have been carried out to support community engagement in planning and urban design processes in Turkey. This study which tries to bring together community engagement and urban design within the framework of sustainability of cultural heritage sites is a part of a scientific research project which aims to create a participative model to develop an urban design guideline for the Hanlar District, a historical commercial district including many inns in the city centre of Bursa, in Turkey. While a series of community engagement techniques were experimented during the project process, the aim of this article is to examine the potential benefits of using educational charrettes as a kind of design charrette to establish a participatory and competitive platform including public, private, voluntary actors and local people in urban design process of heritage sites.
