Stone Mastic Asphalt (SMA) is a mixture design against rutting caused by intensive and heavy traffic loads. While modified bitumen needs to be used in this mixture, the use of cellulosic fibers is essential to prevent the infiltration of bitumen during the carriage of mixture due to high bitumen content. In this study, the effects of basalt fiber on the performance of SMA mixtures is investigated as an alternative to cellulosic fiber admixtures in the prevention of draindown. Raw materials commonly used in Turkey were chosen as Type-I graded limestone aggregate and B50/70 asphalt cement, according to the General Directorate of Highways. In total, 109 specimens were prepared by a gyratory compactor according to the superpave design method. Sixty of these specimens were basalt fiber added samples with a ratio from 0.1 % to 0.8 % by dry weight aggregate. An addition of basalt fiber of 0.6 % at 25 °C seriously increases the resilient modulus and tensile strength of the samples. In addition, 0.4 % basalt fiber mixed samples shows that the greatest resistance against permanent deformation according to the results of static uniaxial creep test performed at 40 °C. Basalt fibers have no positive effect when a decrement of bitumen viscosity exceeds the bitumen softening point at the end of repeated uniaxial tests. On the other hand, bitumen draindown and water damage test results are within acceptable limits.
ÖzNowadays, limited natural resources and huge consumption leads to increase in production costs and energy usage. Increasing energy consumption causes environmental damages, which yield climate change. This situation increases the interest in sustainability along with the recycling of waste material in different areas. While sustainability awareness of society is tried to be created in different countries, research and development studies are also carried out on the other hand. Studies regarding sustainability in civil engineering include recycling and reuse of various wastes. Turkey has 73% of the boron reserves, and provides 50% of boron need in the world. The boron mine can be used in a wide variety of applications such as aerospace and aircraft industries and even in disinfectant production due to the Covid-19 pandemic. On the other hand, boron waste is expected to increase with the increase in production potential. The objective of this study is to introduce the potential of using boron wastes in civil engineering. Applications of boron waste in civil engineering have been researched in the literature and evaluated in detail. As a result of the study, possible boron waste assessment suggestions have been presented for Turkey.
The world has been living tough times both socially and economically because of the novel coronavirus. Social effects of Covid-19 have seen right after precautions taken by governments all around the world. However, precautions brought economical problems. Construction industry is also affected from this situation. To better understand the effect of Covid-19 on construction industry, questionnaire is carried out among people from construction industry. Questions are selected specifically for targeted people in construction industry. Survey is conducted electronically. Participants remained anonymous during survey. Totally 598 participants took part in questionnaire voluntarily. Survey questions are about job safety, finding a new job and precautions. Results indicated that, Covid-19 caused increase in unemployment in construction industry, making it harder to find a new job. This study proves that ordinary workers in the construction industry are the most vulnerable part for Covid -19 pandemic.
