BACKGROUND Trigeminal neuralgia (TN) is defined as intense, abrupt, often unilateral, stabbing, short, repeated episodes of pain in one or more distributional branches of the trigeminal nerve. AIM To see how electromagnetic therapy (EMT) compared to low-level laser therapy (LLLT) affect TN in diabetes patients. DESIGN This is a randomized controlled trial. SETTING Physical therapy and Neurology Outpatients Clinics at Faculty of Physical Therapy. POPULATION One hundred and forty diabetic patients with TN were evaluated for eligibility. As a result, 126 diabetic patients with TN were included in this trial. They were randomly divided into three equal-sized groups using random allocation software. Due to travel to another country, two patients did not complete the treatment protocol, and four opted out of the post-therapy evaluation. So, 120 volunteer diabetic patients with TN of both sexes were diagnosed for the participation in this study by a neurologist (N.=40 in each group). METHODS For two months, participants in the control group A received the medication only (oral hypoglycemic drugs, Analgesics, vitamin B12), participants in the study group B received the medications as in group A in addition to LLLT, and participants in the study group C received medication as in group A in addition to electromagnetic therapy (EMT). The primary outcome was the amplitude of compound muscle action potentials of temporalis and masseter muscles by using NEXUS 10 (Mind media). The secondary outcome was pain intensity by using the Visual Analog Scale (VAS). RESULTS According to the results of this study, there is a statistically significant difference in visual analog scale scores and the amplitude of compound muscle action potentials of the temporalis and masseter muscles among groups in favor of group B. CONCLUSIONS After treatment, all groups improved significantly, with the laser group outperforming the electromagnetic group by a large margin. For irradiation, LLLT was more effective than EMT in reducing diabetic patients’ trigeminal pain, and increasing masseter and temporalis muscles compound action potential amplitude in diabetic patients with TN. CLINICAL REHABILITATION IMPACT LLLT was more effective than EMT at reducing diabetic patient’s trigeminal pain, and increasing masseter and temporalis muscles compound action potential amplitude in diabetic patients with TN patients after two months of interventions.
(1) Background: Children spend a lot of time within schools. The school setting generally has many ergonomic hazards and reinforced behavior patterns which put children at greater risk of environmental hazards than adults during their critical developmental stages. (2) Objective: The aim of the current study was to investigate the prevalence of musculoskeletal disorders (MSDs) and detect spinal deformities amongst general and technical secondary school students. (3) Methods: A total of 418 students from the second grade of secondary school in Shaquira governorate, Egypt participated in this cross-sectional study. Each student in the study was screened via Nordic Musculoskeletal Questionnaire (NMQ) and had their upper limb posture measured via RULA (Rapid Upper Limb assessment), and the deviation in their thoracic curve was measured using a scoliometer. (4) Results: There was a prevalence of MSDs amongst students as there were 69.7% of general school students and 83.8% of the technical school students suffering from MSDs with a statistically significant difference between both technical and general school students in RULA score and musculoskeletal complaints, whereas there were non-statistical differences in the scoliometer scale in both general and technical education students. (5) Conclusions: Musculoskeletal problems are prevalent among Egyptian secondary school students, with higher prevalence between technical school students. Therefore, preventive measures and strategies are recommended to overcome the future complications of these musculoskeletal disorders.
Background. Lower extremity muscles weakness occur after the reconstruction of the anterior cruciate ligament (ACLR), specifically the hip muscles. The literature suggests that decreased hip strength which results from ACLR can lead to biomechanical changes in lower extremity. Objective. The aim of the current study was to assess effects of adding hip strengthening exercises with traditional strengthening exercises on early outcomes after ACLR. Materials and methods. Randomized controlled study was conducted on 50 male participants with primary unilateral ACLR, they were tested pre-operative and after 12 weeks postoperative; for pain intensity by visual analog scale (VAS), side to side difference knee extension limitation range of motion (ROM) by goniometer, and lower extremity function tests by side-to-side single-leg hop test and 10-yards test. They were assigned into two groups; group A (hip strengthening exercises with traditional strengthening exercises) and group B (traditional strengthening exercises only). Both groups received the treatment 3 sessions/week for 12 weeks. Results. The results of independent t-test showed that there were significant improvements (p < 0.05) in all variables (pain intensity, side to side difference knee extension limitation ROM, side-to-side single-leg hop test and 10-yards test) in both groups with superiority of group A. Conclusion. Adding of hip strengthening exercises to traditional strengthening exercises were effective on early outcomes post ACLR.
Background: Pathological conditions of the Shoulder joint are very common as the shoulder is the most freely movable joint in the body (and hence the most unstable). These conditions can lead to pain and disability that affect individuals socially and economically. Purpose: This study was conducted to identify the prevalence and characteristics of shoulder pathologies in two main hospitals in two Egyptian governorates as up to researchers’ knowledge, no previous epidemiological studies of shoulder conditions attending orthopedic physical therapy outpatient clinics have been carried out in Egypt, so the current study provides valuable information about diseases’ burden for researchers and healthcare policy makers, thus assisting in disease prevention , identifying health economic models and establishing guidelines. Methodology: A hospital- based record study was made for 1633 patients, 101 patients of them were suffering from shoulder pathologies, data were collected from patients’ referral records to orthopedic physical therapy outpatient clinics in two hospitals (Kasr Aini educational hospital) (KA) in Cairo and (Benha educational hospital) in Qalubiya – Egypt, that are reviewed from the first of January 2019 to 31 December 2019. Demographic characteristics including (gender, affected side) and different types of pathologies were described.
