Tetralogy of Fallot (TOF) is the most common form of cyanotic congenital heart disease. Less than 3% of all patients with uncorrected TOF reach their 40
th
year of life. We present the case of a 58-year-old woman female with uncorrected TOF. The main factors contributing to her longevity are the early development of aortopulmonary collaterals channels and the relatively gradual narrowing of the right ventricular outflow tract.
Hydatid disease is a parasitic infestation caused by Echinococcus granulosus larvae. It is endemic in subtropical and tropical regions, such as the Mediterranean, the Middle East, South America, Africa and Australia. The liver and lungs are the most often affected organes. Cardiac involvement is very uncommon. We report a case of a 60-year-old patient with cardiac hydatid cyst that presented as acute cardiac tamponade. The patient subsequently underwent pericystectomy through median sternotomy under cardiopulmonary bypass. The postoperative course was uneventful. The patient received postoperative albendazole treatment with favorable clinical course.
scite is a Brooklyn-based organization that helps researchers better discover and understand research articles through Smart Citations–citations that display the context of the citation and describe whether the article provides supporting or contrasting evidence. scite is used by students and researchers from around the world and is funded in part by the National Science Foundation and the National Institute on Drug Abuse of the National Institutes of Health.
