Objective:The aim of the present study was to determine the prevalence of excess weight and analyze eating habits in relation to cardiovascular disease in adolescents from the city of Vitória de Santo Antão, state of Pernambuco, northeast Brazil. Methods:A cross-sectional study was carried out with male and female students (10-19 years old) enrolled at public and private schools in Vitória de Santo Antão. Sociodemographic, anthropometric and lifestyle variables were collected. Food consumption was evaluated using a Food Frequency Questionnaire and subsequently converted to monthly intake pattern scores, obtaining the intake distribution for a group of foods associated with the risk of developing cardiovascular disease and for a group of protective foods. The significance level for the statistical tests was set at 5.0%.Results:The sample consisted of 2866 students. The female gender accounted for 54.2% of the sample, and median age was 14 years (interquartile range: 12-16 years). The food intake scores showed greater dispersion in the group of protective foods (51.1%). Higher median scores for consumption of risk foods were found among adolescents whose mothers had more than 9 years of schooling (p<0.001).Conclusions:Excess weight was prevalent among the students analyzed. The consumption of risk foods was only associated with maternal schooling, which shows the need for nutritional interventions directed at families, regardless of socioeconomic status.
Objective: Evaluate the prevalence and factors associated with trichomoniasis in women receiving primary health care. Methods: A cross-sectional study was developed, involving a sample of 314 medical records, randomly selected through a process of systematic sampling, among women receiving primary health care services. The socioeconomic, demographic and clinical variables were examined. Results: The prevalence of Trichomonas vaginalis was 10.5%, and 35% of the women studied lived in rural areas. The adjusted logistic regression analysis showed that the independent predictors of the presence of trichomoniasis were: high blood pressure, unpleasant vaginal odor and dyspareunia. Conclusion: In terms of practical applicability, the results can provide information for planning new nursing initiatives to prevent and reduce the prevalence of trichomoniasis in women.
-Background -Evidence suggests a nutritional transition process in patients with inflammatory bowel disease. Obesity, which was once an uncommon occurrence in such patients, has grown in this population at the same prevalence rate as that found in the general population, bringing with it an increased risk of cardiovascular disease. Objective -The aim of the present study was to determine the nutritional status and occurrence of cardiovascular risk factors in patients with inflammatory bowel disease. Methods -A case-series cross-sectional study was conducted involving male and female adult outpatients with inflammatory bowel disease. Data were collected on demographic, socioeconomic, clinical and anthropometric variables as well as the following cardiovascular risk factors: sedentary lifestyle, excess weight, abdominal obesity, medications in use, comorbidities, alcohol intake and smoking habits. The significance level for all statistical tests was set to 5% (P < 0.05). Results -The sample comprised 80 patients with inflammatory bowel disease, 56 of whom (70.0%) had ulcerative colitis and 24 of whom (30.0%) had Crohn's disease. Mean age was 40.3±11 years and the female genre accounted for 66.2% of the sample. High frequencies of excess weight (48.8%) and abdominal obesity (52.5%) were identified based on the body mass index and waist circumference, respectively, in both groups, especially among those with ulcerative colitis. Muscle depletion was found in 52.5% of the sample based on arm muscle circumference, with greater depletion among patients with Crohn's disease (P=0.008). The most frequent risk factors for cardiovascular disease were a sedentary lifestyle (83.8%), abdominal obesity (52.5%) and excess weight (48.8%). Conclusion -The results of the complete anthropometric evaluation draw one's attention to a nutritional paradox, with high frequencies of both -muscle depletion, as well as excess weight and abdominal obesity. HEADINGS -Inflammatory bowel disease. Overweight. Malnutrition. Risk factors. Cardiovascular disease.
Objective: To analyze the prevalence and factors associated with the cooperation of arterial hypertension patients in primary health care. Methods: Cross-sectional study that included 458 hypertensive patients, randomly selected among primary care users. The study variables were socioeconomic, demographic and clinical and the research instruments used were validated. The logistic regression model was used for multivariate statistical analysis. Results: The prevalence rates found for patient cooperation corresponded to 26.6%, 16.6% and 85.6% on the Morisky-Green, Batalla and Haynes-Sackett tests, respectively. The adjusted logistic regression analysis showed economic class and smoking as the independent predictors of hypertensive patients' cooperation. Conclusion: The prevalence of treatment adherence varied according to the assessment instrument used. The factors associated with treatment adherence were: high socioeconomic class, living with a partner and being eutrophic. Keywords
