Primary prostatic signet ring cell carcinoma is a rare form of cancer with a poor prognosis, which is generally treated with a traditional prostate adenocarcinoma therapy. This case report presents a 70-year-old diagnosed with primary prostatic signet ring cell carcinoma, treated with a combination of radiotherapy and hormone therapy and a 16 month survival without an evidence of the disease at follow up.
Objective:To examine the incidence of restless legs syndrome (RLS) among children with iron deficiency, or iron deficiency anemia, or both, and the relationship between RLS prevalence and serum ferritin levels. Methods:This prospective, cross-sectional, case controlled study was carried out between January and June 2013, and included 98 iron deficiency and/or iron deficiency anemia, and 102 healthy children referred to the Neurology and Pediatric Departments of the Medical Faculty of Bezmialem Vakif University, Istanbul, Turkey. Both groups were evaluated according to the International Restless Legs Syndrome Study Group diagnostic criteria. Results:The range of ferritin levels was 0.01-12 mg/ml in patients while it was 12.3-91.8 mg/mL in the control group. Restless legs syndrome was detected in 61.2% of children with iron deficiency anemia, and in 37.3% of children with normal biochemistry values. A statistically significant correlation was found between serum ferritin levels and frequency of RLS. In patients with serum ferritin levels higher than 50 ng/ml, 92.3% had no RLS, while 55.2% of patients with serum ferritin levels lower than 50ng/ml had RLS. The patients with serum ferritin levels of >50ng/ml had a significantly higher incidence of RLS. Serum ferritin levels were significantly different between the 2 groups. Conclusion:The incidence of RLS, also known as Willis-Ekbom Disease, is high in children aged between 8-18 years with iron deficiency, or iron deficiency anemia, or both. This finding supports the importance of iron replacement therapy especially during the growth and development of children.
Forty-one depressive and 57 nondepressive patients with non-insulin-dependent diabetes mellitus (NIDDM, type 2) were compared for demographic and clinical variables. The depressive patients were more likely to have a history of depression than non-depressive patients. The female patients were more likely to have depression than males. Results suggest that depression in NIDDM was only associated with female gender and previous depressive episodes.
Annelere mamalar hakkındaki fikirleri açık uçlu olarak sorulduğunda %68,8'i mamalara güvenmediğini, %8,3'u fikri olmadığını belirtmişti. Sonuç: Annelerin doğumdan itibaren bebeklerini anne sütü ile beslemeyi seçtikleri görülmekteyken, ilerleyen aylarda anneler tamamen sezgilerine dayanarak anne sütünün yetmediği, bebeklerinin doymadıkları duygusuna kapılmaktadırlar. Özellikle ilk 6 aydaki çocuk sağlığı izlemlerinde normal gelişim gösteren bebeklerin annelerine, annenin sütünün bebeğin gelişimi için yeterli olduğu mutlaka belirtilmeli, anneler bebeklerini sadece anne sütü ile besleme konusunda desteklenmeli ve cesaretlendirilmelidir. Anahtar kelimeler: Anne sütü; ek besinler; formül mamalar. ABSTRACT Objective:The World Health Organization recommends that during the first 6 months of life babies should be exclusively breast-fed and complemantary feeding should be started at 6 months of age, and breastfeeding should continue at least 2 years. In Turkey although majority of mothers prefer to feed their babies with breastmilk after delivery, they start supplementation before 6 months of age. The aim of this study is to investigate why and when mothers start supplementary feeding and to find out their opinions about formulas.
