The Malay Archipelago in Southeast Asia comprising islands rich in natural resources was the main reason for its significance in the commercial trade lane via sea routes in Asia. These bustling sea activities led to attacks on ships and seizures of goods by pirates. Various measures were carried out by the colonial outhorities against the pirates in the hope of destroying them and reviving the thriving commercial activities. In order to protect the political and economic interests of the ruling party/government then, the gruesome activities of the pirates had to be reported to all parties. Such As, The Illustrated London News (ILN) took several initiatives to report on the development and steps taken to battle pirate attacks and activities of the British in their colonies, especially in Southeast Asia. Each report was enclosed with visual prints related to the incidents. These include efforts to eliminate the pirates in the Borneo Island, especially in Sabah and Sarawak and also the Sulu archipelago. Unlike in the West, the emergence of visual printing and printing press in Malaya was comparatively lagged behind. Publication and printing reached the Malayan shore through the Straits Settlements after the first publication was brought in and introduced by A. B. Bone in 1806. Since then, various visual reports regarding Malaya made their way into the well-known newspapers in Britain, The Illustrated London News (ILN) and The Graphic. Social activities in Malaya became part of the main visual report in these newspapers. Nonetheless, it was found that these newspapers were not objective in reporting the news on social activities in Malaya. In lieu of this, the current research attempted to find out the extent of the action of ILN and The Graphic in manipulating visual news report about the social activities in Malaya in the 19th century. In addition, this research also aimed to find out how far the ideas and thoughts of both newspapers in describing the news reports related to social activities in Malaya in the 19th century. This research focuses on the 19th century, within the specified period, of which the two respective presses released many visual news reports regarding social activities in Malaya. The qualitative method and visual approach were chosen as the research itself was conducted in London, especially at the National Art Library, situated in the Victoria and Albert Museum. In Malaysia, materials and resources were obtained from the Malaysian National Archive, National Museum, National Library, and libraries at higher learning institutions.

The purpose of this study is to understand how to perceive and appreciate works of art. A work of art has its unique aesthetic worth, which is determined by the artist’s philosophy or manner of thought when transmitting to society the meaning of his work. Aesthetics is a subfield of philosophy concerned with the study of the beauty found on this globe (Kamus Dewan Edisi Keempat, 2007). This research is divided into the two sections, the first of which discusses the phrase in further detail, and the second of which analyzes the chosen artwork. This description will be separated into three sections: terminology definition, style, and idea definition, and context definition. The purpose of this research is to interpret the message and context communicated by an artist’s artwork using the approach of art criticism theory introduced by Edmund Burke Feldman (1994). According to Barret (1994), art criticism is a term that refers to the interpretation and analysis of the artwork on exhibition. According to Ahmad Suhaimi Mohd Noor and Jamilah Omar (2008), artworks that have a message will be more meaningful.
