Barite is now ranked as an important non-metallic mineral commodity because of its extensive use in weighting drilling muds and concrete aggregate, in the chemical industry, and in the manufacture of paint, glass, and rubber. According to the U. S. Bureau of Mines, aboutr one million short tons of barite was produced in the United States during 1952. Imports in 1952 totaled three hundred thousand short tons. The United States is the world's leading producer and consumer of barite.
