The morphology of the neoplastic cells was studied in four cases of leukaemic reticuloendotheliosis (LRE). Aspirated material from the spleen and liver was found to be rich in cells with the characteristic morphology and this may be of value for the diagnosis since leukopenia is common and bone marrow may be hard to obtain in LRE. No phagocytic activity could be demonstrated in the leukaemic cells. The incorporation of tritiated thymidine into the cells was extremely low, indicating a low proliferative capacity of the neoplastic tissue. It is suggested that the richness in neoplastic, lymphoid reticulum cells in blood, bone marrow, spleen and liver is due to an accumulation of cells with a low rate of proliferation.
scite is a Brooklyn-based organization that helps researchers better discover and understand research articles through Smart Citations–citations that display the context of the citation and describe whether the article provides supporting or contrasting evidence. scite is used by students and researchers from around the world and is funded in part by the National Science Foundation and the National Institute on Drug Abuse of the National Institutes of Health.
