:In cultivation of medicinal trees, seed germination is a very important problem. Various seed enhancements are being adopted nowadays to improve seedling emergence. Among these seed enhancement, seed fortification is an efficient method for increasing of seed vigour and improvement of germination and seedling growth. The laboratory experiment was conducted at the Department of Seed Science and Technology, Tamil Nadu Agricultural University, Coimbatore. The present study was conducted for evaluation of ecofriendly seed treatment with three botanical fresh leaf extracts in two concentrations with the soaking durations of 3 and 6h in Bael (Aegle marmelos). The results revealed that soaking of seeds in one per cent moringa (Moringa oleifera) leaf extract for 6h adopting 1:1 seed to solution ratio enhanced the seedling quality characters of bael in germination room and it was followed by 0.5 per cent tamarind (Tamarindus indica) leaf extract. On evaluation of these treatments at polypot nursery upto three months also exposed the efficacy of these treatments in production elite seedlings.
A field experiment was conducted to study the stigma receptivity and method of pollination in improving pod and seed quality in glory lily at Botanical Garden, Tamil Nadu Agricultural University, Coimbatore. Results revealed that, dusting of foreign pollen on the stigma (pollination) one day after anthesis resulted in higher pod set of 88 per cent, while pollination on the day of anthesis resulted in 80 per cent and bud pollination one day before anthesis resulted in 68 per cent pod set. These results clearly revealed that the stigma of glory lily flower was receptive even before anthesis and continued to attain the maximum receptivity one day post anthesis. Among different pollination methods, hand pollination was the best as revealed through the superiority in terms of pod and seed yield parameters such as maximum pod set (96 %), higher pod length (8.4 cm), pod girth (6.8 cm) and weight of pod (4.92 g) and higher seed weight per pod (3.04 g), number of seeds per pod (74.0) and shelling percentage (61.78 %) accompanied with better seed quality parameters such as higher germination (54 %) and vigour index (1252) of the seeds in glory lily.
India is one of the top ten industrialized countries of global importance. But industries release waste products, which exert negative influences by causing toxicity to biotic organisms and environment. Liquid wastes of industries termed as effluents are characterized with possession of organic and inorganic compounds that evolve with varying levels of toxicity based on the type of industry and its bi-product. Recycling of treated effluent serves as an alternative to tie over water scarcity in sustainable agriculture. On the other hand, dilutions of industrial effluents serves as growth stimulants at an optimal concentration and influences the seed and seedling quality characters and aids in improving the productivity of crops. The safe levels of dilutions expressing the seed invigourative effect are reviewed hereunder, which could serve as a solution for disposal of effluent in agriculture in an effective manner.
