The objective of this study is to estimate the reference values for the upper limb peripheral nerves in adults.The demographics and physical characteristics of 69 adult healthy volunteers were evaluated and recorded. In addition, the side to side differences of the estimated reference values and their correlations with the age, weight, height, and body mass index (BMI) were evaluated.Cross-sectional area reference values of the upper limb nerves did not correlate with height; however, they correlated with age, weight, and BMI in some scanned sites.The data obtained in this study could be helpful in future diagnosis of peripheral nerve disorders of the upper limb.
The aim of the study is to evaluate the reliability of shear wave elastography to assess the anterior and middle scalene muscles in healthy adult subjects.The study included 60 scalene muscles in 15 healthy subjects. High-resolution ultrasound and shear wave elastography were used to evaluate the anterior scalene and the middle scalene muscles. Stiffness values were measured.The mean shear elastic modulus showed the following values, right anterior scalene muscle 18.83 ± 5.32 kPa, left anterior scalene muscle 21.71 ± 4.8 kPa, right middle scalene muscle 12.84 ± 5.2 kPa, left middle scalene muscle 19.76 ± 5.30 kPa. Positive correlation was noted between the left middle scalene muscle and body mass index (P = .004). No difference in elasticity was noted between the right and left anterior scalene muscles; however, significant difference was noted between the right and left middle scalene muscles (P = .002).The results obtained in our study could be a reference point for future research considering different scalene muscle pathologies.Abbreviations: BMI = body mass index, SWE = shear wave elastography.
The study included 38 ulnar nerves in 20 healthy subjects. High-resolution ultrasound and Shear wave elastography were used to evaluate the ulnar nerve at the mid forearm. The mean cross-sectional area of the ulnar nerve was 7.1 mm2. The mean shear elastic modulus of the nerve in the short axis was 27.4 kPa. The mean shear elastic modulus of the nerve in long axis was 24.7 kPa. No statistical relation could be noted between elasticity measurements in long and short axes. The ulnar nerve elastic modulus also showed no correlation with CSA neither in the long axis nor short axis. Age, height, weight, and body mass index showed no correlation with the ulnar elastic modulus in short or long axes. The elastic modulus of the ulnar nerve has been determined in healthy subjects and can serve as a reference for future assessment of compressive neuropathies of the ulnar nerve.
The aim of this study is to compare the distal femoral cartilage thickness of patients with type II diabetes mellitus with those of healthy subjects using ultrasonography. The study comprised 34 patients and 36 healthy subjects. Demographic characteristics of all the participants were recorded. The thickness of the femoral articular cartilage was measured using a 5-18MHzlinearprobe.Measurements were performed bilaterally from three points (intercondylar area, medial condyle, and lateral condyle). No significant difference could be found between patients and healthy subjects. Two demographic characteristics correlated positively with diabetic patients.
The paranasal sinuses are hollowed, air-filled cavities surrounding the nasal cavity. Many pathological processes affect the sinuses, but inflammatory conditions are the commonest, even in asymptomatic patients who undergo head imaging for other indications showing one or more abnormalities of the sinuses. Our research aims to determine the prevalence of incidental paranasal sinuses abnormalities seen among patients who undergo head CT scanning. In addition, it provides baseline information for further investigations required. The study was designed to evaluate all patients who underwent head CT scanning for any reason unrelated to paranasal sinuses abnormalities. 1849 cases were selected and retrospectively analyzed from the elective and emergency CT in the last nine months, from August 2020 to April 2021. In order to meet the inclusion criteria, indications for imaging must not be sinus-related. The study was conducted on 1849 cases who had undergone head CT scans for pathology, 1204 (65%) were male and 645 (35%) were female. Abnormalities of the sinuses were found in about 617 (33%) of all patients, with a higher rate in males (22.23%) than females (11.14%). In addition, these abnormalities were found in younger patients at a higher rate than in middle and old ages 19.74%, 7.19%, and 6.44%, respectively. Our findings revealed that the prevalence of paranasal sinuses abnormalities in asymptomatic Saudi patients was high (33%). Most of the affected sinuses were the maxillary. The male patients were more affected than females in all findings.
