Background and aims : Career advancement can lead to productivity and success of educational canters and universities. Academic employees have a significant role in the community education and social development. Success in universities depends on academic employee's career advancement and quality of workplace. Quality of work life (QWL) views the organizational environment in accordance with employees' needs (health and safety, economic and family, social, esteem, actualization, knowledge and aesthetic). This study investigated the relationship between QWL and career advancement among academic employees in Hamadan, Iran. M ethods: The structured questionnaires were based on information of 307 randomly selected academics in two Hamadan public universities in year 2013. The data collection was based on a self-administered questionnaire including background characteristics, seven dimensions of quality of work life and four dimensions of career advancement. Data was analyzed with structural equation modelling (AMOS) method. Results: The mean age of respondents was 39.67 (7.4) years. M ost of them had Ph.D (70%) and 30% had M .Sc. educational level. M ajority of respondents perceived moderate level of QWL (73%) and perceived high level of career advancement (62.2%). The results of the patch analysis showed that quality of work life and career advancement was significantly and positively related (ß=.28, P=.039). Conclusions: It can be concluded that there was a positive and significant relationship between quality of work life and career advancement. The results of the study supported this idea that higher quality of work life lead to higher career advancement. Therefore, improving quality of work life of academics in universities might have high impact on educational and community development in country.
How an academic leader can become more effective? This research question is examined in the context of middle level leadership in research universities that includes the Deans and Head of Departments. It is based on a review of literature that focuses on the investigation of effective academic leadership. In the present situation of globalization, academic excellence is often related to being World Class University. Leadership effectiveness is more related to situational leadership style in research universities and in a global context. Hence situational leadership models such as Hersey and Blanchard and Yetton-Vroom are analyzed. It is suggested that effective academic leaders use the four styles proposed by Hersey and Blanchard that includes “telling, selling, participating and delegating”. These styles should be used in relation to ability and willingness of followers to perform the assigned tasks. The review also indicated that to be effective, academic leaders require certain competencies and perform the necessary roles in order to lead. Effective academic leaders need the skills and abilities to lead research universities towards excellence. Roles of academic leaders are examined in relation to Mintzberg leadership roles. The ten roles identified by Mintzberg are categorized into three major roles of interpersonal contact, information processing and decision making. To summarize, effective academic leaders utilized various leadership styles according to certain situations, possessed the required competencies and assumed certain roles when appointed as Deans and Head of Departments in research universities. As such it is important that a systematic leadership development programs should be developed to ensure academic leadership effectiveness
In a two-year study ten commercial date palm varieties were evaluated. The varieties showed varying response to Rhynchophorus ferrugineus Oliv; some varieties suffered heavy infestation while others indicated tolerance against R. ferrugineus. The most tolerant varieties with less infestation percentage against R. ferrugineus were Muzawati (8%) followed by Pathri (12%), Thothar (15%), Khar and Shakri (16%) respectively. The varieties which suffered high infestation rate were Karbalain, Dhedhi, Fasli, Aseel and Eidan Shah. To control the R. ferrugineus infestation pheromone trapping system was used. Significantly more R. ferrugineus (18-21) adults were captured during the 1 st , 2 nd , 3 rd week of July and 2 nd week of June. The studies conducted will be helpful in survey and control of R. ferrugineus infestation in Khairpur District of Sindh province.
