Isotretinoin, a medication for acne, has been reported to cause a variety of side effects on the musculoskeletal system. We present a case of sacroiliitis (a relatively uncommon feature) and sensorimotor demyelinating polyneuropathy, which has been reported previously in only a few cases during isotretinoin therapy. Clinical symptoms were improved after the withdrawal of isotretinoin and the follow-up electrophysiological study performed 2 years after the initial diagnosis of polyneuropathy showed mild improvement. Dermatologists are advised to be alert to symptoms of polyneuropathy and sacroiliitis during treatment with isotretinoin.
Cystic echinococcosis caused by Echinococcus granulosus is still an important health problem in endemic areas. Cystic echinococcosis may involve different organs or areas with the most common sites being the liver and the lungs. Pelvic involvement has previously been reported and was mainly accepted as secondary to cystic echinococcosis in other organs, isolated pelvic involvement is very rare. In this case report, we aimed to present the case with pelvic cystic mass that was finally diagnosed with isolated pelvic cystic echinococcosis in and after the operation, and we would like to draw attention to include "cystic echinococcosis" in the differential diagnosis of pelvic masses.
KARACA, S. O.; TASKIN, M. I.; KEYIK, B.Y.; SACKES, M.; OZCAN, E. & KUS, I.Comparison of three methods for estimating volume of the uterine layers in healthy women: A stereological study. Int. J. Morphol., 36(2):614-622, 2018. SUMMARY:Aim of this study is to measure the volume of the uterine layers in healthy women according to the menstrual cycle phases and to test the agreement between three methods. The study was performed with 28 healthy women. Participants were divided into three groups as follicular (n=7), luteal (n=10) and postmenopausal phase (n=11). We used the point-counting and planimetry method in MR images and the ellipsoid methods in images obtained by transvaginal ultrasonography. Spearman correlation analysis showed significant negative correlations between the volumes of uterine layers and age (p<0.01). The volumes of the total uterus, the total myometrium and the endometrium measured with planimetry and point-counting methods were significantly lower in the postmenopausal women (p<0.01). While volumes of total uterus and the total myometrium significantly lower in the postmenopausal group in measurements done using ellipsoid method, the decrease in the volume of the endometrium was not statistically significant. The Bland-Altman test results indicated an excellent agreement between point-counting and planimetry methods in the volumetric measurements. The ellipsoid method might be inadequate for determining uterine layers volume particularly the endometrium volume. The stereological methods permit unbiased and efficient estimation of volume of uterine layers in vivo examination of MRI.
Paget-Schroetter syndrome is a rare clinical entity, which is characterized by the thrombosis of the axillary and/or subclavian vein resulting from the activation of the coagulation cascade due to vigorous and repetitive activity of the arm and the external compression related microtrauma to the venous intima. The first imaging modality for diagnosis should be color Doppler ultrasonography. Thrombolysis and surgical decompression of the thoracic outlet are focused on relieving the external compression of the veins. In this case report, we aimed to present the greyscale ultrasonography and dynamic Doppler ultrasonography findings of a patient with upper extremity deep venous thrombosis.
