The problem in this research was how is students’ motivation in reading English at grade VIII SMP Negeri 4 Baubau. This research was descriptive qualitative research. The population of the research was grade VIII of SMP Negeri 4 Baubau which consisted of 11 classes with total 345 students. The sample in this research was taken with random sampling technique that was class VIII.1 which consisted of 25 students. The instrument used was Motivations for Reading Questionnaire (MRQ). The research outcome showed that 5 students out of the total student are in high motivation category, 13 students out of the total students are in average motivation level, and 7 students out of the total students are in low motivation level. Then, it can be concluded that the students’ reading motivation level is in the average motivation level.
During the pandemic Covid-19, among the many long-distance communication applications, the teachers at SMAN 5 Baubau choose Whatsapp Group as learning media which could be used on weak networks and also does not consume internet quota like the others. The objectives of this study was to find the using of this application as a learning media at SMAN 5 Baubau and the impact of this application on the distance learning process during the covid-19 pandemic. The present study used qualitative method. This research carried out in June - December 2020 at SMA Negeri 5 Baubau. The subjects in this study were 18 students at SMA Negeri 5 Baubau with details of Class X (6 people), Class XI (6 people) and Class XII (6 people). The instruments used in this research was interview. The findings showed that the majority of students did not have problems or obstacles in using this application. However, some students found it difficult in the learning process that depends on the chat in the group. Although students did not have obstacles in operating the application, but as a medium of learning students had many obstacles and WhatsApp as a learning medium would be more complicated if it is not supported by the creativity of the teacher.
The formulation of the problem in this study is whether there is a correlation between students' vocabulary mastery and their ability to translate English texts into Indonesian at MAS Al-Barokah Kolese students. The purpose of this study was to determine whether there was a correlation between students' vocabulary mastery and their ability to translate English texts into Indonesian at MAS Al-Barokah Kolese students. Data collection in this study was carried out using a research instrument in the form of a test to students to determine the correlation between students' vocabulary mastery and their ability to translate English text into Indonesian. This research is a quantitative research. The subjects of this study were 27 grade 10 students of MAS Al-Barokah Kolese. Data were analyzed using Statistical Product and Service Solution (SPSS) version 22.0. Based on the results of research and data analysis, it was concluded that there was a correlation between students' vocabulary mastery and their ability to translate English texts into Indonesian from grade 10 students at MAS Al-Barokah Kolese. This conclusion is based on the results of statistical analysis which found a significance level of 0.996 with an r table value of 0.381. The rxy value is greater than the r table value (0.996> 0.381) and the significance value is less than (0.5) or in other words the Null hypothesis (HO) is rejected and the alternative hypothesis (H1) is accepted.
The purpose of this study was to determine the increase in vocabulary mastery of the eight grade students of SMP Negeri 3 Lasalimu through local stories. This study used a pre-experimental design. The sample in this study were students of class VIII, amounting to 14 students. The instrument used in this study was a test. The results obtained are: 1) the pretest results obtained an average value of 43.21 and the posttest obtained an average value of 66.07%; 2) based on the results of hypothesis testing, sig. (2-tailed) is 0.000 <0.05, so it can be concluded that Ho was rejected and H1 was accepted. Therefore the use of regional folklore has a positive influence on vocabulary mastery of students in class VIII SMP Negeri 3 Lasalimu in the 2018/2019 academic year.
The research is conducted to find out the significant difference between the vocabulary mastery of students who are taught using the personal vocabulary note method and those taught using conventional methods. This research used experimental design. The population in this research is 33 students of class VIII SMP Negeri 4 Kadatua that consisted of 2 classes. The sample was taken by using a sample group consisting of 16 students in the experimental class, and 17 students for the control class. The instrument used in this study was a vocabulary test. The results of this study indicate that: 1) the mean score of the pretest in experimental class was 43.18 and the final test was 71.87; 2) the mean score of the control class in pretest was 44.70 and the final test was 64.11; and 3) Hypothesis testing has a significance of 0.23 which is smaller than α 0.05. Based on these results, it can be concluded that there is a significant difference in the vocabulary mastery of students who are taught using the personal vocabulary note method and taught using conventional methods in class VIII students of SMP Negeri 4 Kadatua.
