Act. Polymerica 36 (1985) Nr. 12 691 Methyl methacrylate conc.Fig. 8. Effect of monomer concentration on the graft yield
Other vinyl ttionomersThe ability of ferrous cellulose thiocarbonate -H202 redox system t o induce grafting of ethyl acrylate, methylmethacrylate, acrylonitrile and acrylamide onto cellulose was studied. The results obtained are shown i n Fig. 7.The extent and rate of grafting follow the order: acrylamide > methyl methacrylate > ethyl acrylate > acrylonitrile. This reflectes differences between these monomers in solubility, molecular size and reactivity. Fig. 8 shows t h e effect of methyl methacrylate concentration on the graft yield. Within the range studied t h e graft yield increases significantly b y increasing MMA concentration in accordance with previous studies [35] which ascribed this t o gel formation due t o t h e solubility of poly(MMA) in its own monomer. Furthermore, probable complex formation between cellulose and MMA is favourable a t higher MMA concentration [35]. Complexation of MMA with cellulose is thought t o enhance t h e reactivity of MMA thereby giving rise t o increased grafting. References [ l ] DIMOV, K., and PAVLOV, P.: J.
