In contrast, we obtain a domestic merger outcome whenever …rms are su¢ ciently heterogeneous (in terms of productive e¢ ciency and product di¤erentiation). A domestic merger unfolds a "wage-unifying"e¤ect which limits the union's ability to extract rents. When asymmetries among …rms vanish, then cross-border mergers are the unique equilibrium. However, they may be either between symmetric or asymmetric …rms. Social welfare is never higher under a domestic merger outcome than under a crossborder merger outcome. Terms of use: Documents in Unionization Structures in AbstractWe examine how competition in international markets a¤ects a union's choice of wage regime which can be either uniform or discriminatory. Firms are heterogenous with regard to international competition. When unions choose their wage regimes sequentially, a discriminatory outcome becomes more likely when international competition increases. However, for intermediate levels a union may stick with a uniform wage regime even if the rival union adopts a discriminatory regime. When competition is su¢ ciently intense, both unions revert to the discriminatory regime. Paradoxically only in those latter instances all parties (consumers, workers and …rms) may be better o¤ (each in aggregate) if all unions adopt a uniform wage regime. We conclude that union incentives to coordinate their wage regimes should then also become largest.JEL-Classi…cation: D43, J51, L13.

In our experiments employers remunerate workers doing a real-effort task. We vary the way how a minimum remuneration policy is introduced. In the worker-participation treatment, workers bargain with the employer on the enforcement of the policy. In the control treatment the policy is exogenously introduced. We find a pronounced effort increase after the policy was enforced. An exogenous introduction has detrimental effects, i.e., employers frequently pay a premium to maintain performance. Thus, worker participation may be an effective means for maintaining reciprocity under minimum remuneration policies.JEL Classification: C91, J31, J33, M52
We provide a comparison of bidding behavior between multi-round and single-round auctions considering bid lettings for asphalt construction contracts. Using a reduced-form difference-in-difference approach as well as the nonparametric estimation technique proposed by Racine and Li (2004) we find that, bidding is more aggressive in a sequential multi-round setting than in a simultaneous single-round format. We explore potential causes for the bidding difference across formats related to synergies and level of bidder participation.JEL Classification: D44, H57.
