Motorcycle accidents: morbidity and associated factors in a city of northeast of Brazil

Motorcycle accidents are becoming a public health problem in developing world. The objective of this paper was to assess the factors related to morbidity and mortality among victims of motorcycle accidents in a trauma center. An analysis of 9,734 medical records of patients hospitalized for external causes at the Regional Emergency and Trauma Hospital of Campina Grande, Paraiba, Brazil, from January to December 2009 was done. The cases of accidents with motorcycles accounted for 20.8% of all hospital care, mostly affecting men (85.8%) aged 21-29 years old (33.9%). Legs and feet (55.2%) and arms and hands (26.9%) were the most affected parts of the body. The association between the occurrence of motorcycle accident affecting the face (p=0.001), the chest (p<0.001), arms and hands (p=0.004) and legs and feet (p<0.001) was observed. Multiple lesions were present in 40.4% of the cases; and the majority (80.6%) involved fractures. Amputation and functional impairment were observed in 15.3% and 4.3% of the victims, respectively. Vascular lesions in the lower limbs had a 3.5 times higher chance of occurrence among injured motorcyclists. Fatal accidents accounted for 1.3% of the injured victims. In conclusion, motorcycle accidents affect men, predominantly, most of them being young, causing fractures and multiple lesions, mainly in the lower limbs. There is need for greater incentive to actions concerning traffic safety education focusing on motorcyclists, as well as greater control by competent authorities as regards to the use of motorcycles in the country. _________________________________________________________________________________________

Esta revisão sistemática descreve as características de vítimas e agressores em casos que envolvem abuso sexual, a partir da análise dos dados de 24 artigos científicos selecionados dentre 81 trabalhos encontrados por mecanismos de busca na BVS e PubMed nos anos de 2008 e 2009. Dados sociodemográficos e físicos das vítimas e agressores foram investigados. Constituíram critérios de exclusão a abordagem de temática diversa da pretendida e não-caracterização das vítimas e agressores nos referidos trabalhos. As vítimas são, sobretudo, do sexo feminino, e a maioria dos estudos trabalhou com adolescentes. Em relação ao perpetrador, predominaram indivíduos do sexo masculino, sendo a maioria conhecida da vítima. Metade dos agressores se constituiu em familiares. Os casos de abuso sexual praticados contra crianças têm um perfil que se repete e, até certo ponto, é previsível, podendo haver a implementação de políticas públicas e medidas socioeducativas no sentido de combater essa prática perniciosa. Isso gera a necessidade de iniciativas mais efetivas na política de proteção à criança e de ação conjunta dos vários setores para avançar na repressão de tais atos e promover eventos e campanhas para conscientização e prevenção da violência sexual praticada contra crianças.

Objective: To evaluate the occurrence of head and face injuries and associated factors among victims of automobile accidents in a trauma center. Material and Methods: A cross-sectional study was developed through the analysis of 9,734 medical records of children and adults hospitalized due to external causes in the Regional Hospital of Emergency and Trauma at Campina Grande, Brazil. Data were analyzed with the SPSS software version 15, also using the Pearson's chi-square test. The significance level adopted was 5 %. Results: Cases of automobile accidents accounted for 25.9% (n = 463) of hospitalizations due to external causes, and 83.8 % of victims were male and 16.2 % were female, representing a sex ratio of 5.1:1. As for age group, most had between 20 and 29 years (38.1%) and with respect to the day of the week, 40.8 % of incidents occurred over the weekend. The occurrence of injury was greater on the face (17.4%) than on the head (7.8%) and most victims had a single injury (58.5%). The existence of bone fractures was observed in 76.9 % of victims and 14.7 % had functional impairment. There was association between variables age (p < 0.001), sex (p < 0.001), day of the week (p < 0.001), presence of bone fractures (p < 0.001) and functional impairment (p = 0.002) with the occurrence of automobile accidents. Conclusion: The most automobile accidents occur on weekends and affect young male individuals, with frequent presence of fractures among victims. The occurrence of injury was greater on the face than on the head. Factors such as age, sex, presence of bone fractures and functional impairment was associated with automobile accidents.
