Thanks to their ability to produce ecosystem services, forest ecosystems have a significant social, economic and environmental impact on the development of many regions in the world, especially when located in urban and peri-urban areas. Today, increased forest vulnerability is being reflected in a larger number of severe decline episodes associated mainly with drought. In this context, the Mediterranean area shows high forest vulnerability and a subsequent decline in its natural renewal rate. In this scenario, the aim of the present research is to assess sustainability of a protected pristine deciduous oak forest near Rome, developing a forest health condition monitoring tool based on the application of multispectral satellite data, and through the identification of silvicultural models appropriate for promoting natural forest renewal. The preliminary results of this research indicate how the exclusion of wildlife through fenced areas significantly favors the natural renewal of the forest, especially when silvicultural actions such as thinning are carried out. It has also been ascertained through the use of multispectral satellite data that there is a widespread decline in the health vegetative state of the deciduous oak surfaces, due to a widespread senescence of the forest. In the addressed study area, the Natural State Reserve of Castelporziano (Rome), data and results from this research can work as an important decision tool for sustainable forest management.
Il decreto legislativo n. 34 del 3 aprile 2018 (Testo Unico in materia di Foreste e Filiere forestali, TUFF) dispone che il sistema di pianificazione forestale gestito dalle Regioni e Province Autonome sia, in una certa misura, uniformato a scala nazionale. In questa prospettiva, al fine di uniformare anche gli elaborati della pianificazione, l'art. 6 comma 7 del TUFF ha previsto un apposito decreto attuativo, emanato a fine 2021, che prevede standard minimi comuni a livello nazionale. Quest'ultimo decreto ha rinviato a un successivo atto ministeriale la definizione dell'elenco e dei formati dei dati alfanumerici e geografici, ivi compresa la struttura dati per la registrazione degli interventi selvicolturali realizzati in attuazione di piani e degli eventi occorsi, e le modalità con cui riportare i metadati.
The Mediterranean ecosystem represents an important natural resource, being able to produce ecosystem services, has both economic and social repercussions, especially if located in urban and peri-urban areas. In the last decades, increased forest vulnerability is being reflected in a larger number of severe decline episodes associated mainly with drought conditions. In this context, the Mediterranean area shows high forest vulnerability and a subsequent decline in its natural renewal rate. In this context, the objective of this research is to evaluate the different vegetation indices to monitor the effect of drought on the health of the Castelporziano pine wood. For this purpose, we used the NDVI, NDII and NMDI, provided by ESA Sentinel-2 images and field observations, to monitor the health status of a historic pinewood that has recently been affected by a rapid spread of parasites ( Tomicus destruens Woll .). The application of these indices, on the scale of the entire pinewood, showed that the NDVI and NDII indices differentiate better the changes in vegetative health status for the observed period than the NMDI. Moreover, NDVI and NDII were applied, based on the classifications made, to volume and age classes. Ultimately, these preliminary results require further studies to better understand the potential and limiting factors of the indices used in monitoring pinewoods under stress due to aridity.
