Whereas Lake Tanganyika's littoral and benthic zones are famous for their diverse fish communities, its pelagic zone is dominated by few species, of which two representatives of Clupeidae (Limnothrissa miodon and Stolothrissa tanganicae) take a pivotal role. We investigated the monogenean fauna infecting these freshwater clupeids to explore the link between parasite morphology and host species identity, or seasonal and geographical origin, which may reveal host population structure. Furthermore, we conducted phylogenetic analyses to test whether these parasitic flatworms mirror their host species' marine origin. Based on 406 parasite specimens infecting 385 host specimens, two monogenean species of Kapentagyrus Kmentová, Gelnar and Vanhove, gen. nov. were morphologically identified and placed in the phylogeny of Dactylogyridae using three molecular markers. One of the species, Kapentagyrus limnotrissae comb. nov., is host-specific to L. miodon while its congener, which is new to science and described as Kapentagyrus tanganicanus Kmentová, Gelnar and Vanhove, sp. nov., is infecting both clupeid species. Morphometrics of the parasites' hard parts showed intra-specific variability, related to host species identity and seasonality in K. tanganicanus. Significant intra-specific differences in haptor morphometrics between the northern and southern end of Lake Tanganyika were found, and support the potential use of monogeneans as tags for host population structure. Based on phylogenetic inference, we suggest a freshwater origin of the currently known monogenean species infecting clupeids in Africa, with the two species from Lake Tanganyika representing a quite distinct lineage.

Description of the subject. This study is the first to compile the diversity of wild edible mushrooms gathered in the different ecosystems (savanna, woodland, montane forest, and exotic tree plantations) of Burundi and Rwanda and to consider this resource in a developmental framework for the region. Objectives. The aim of this study is to update the inventory of wild edible mushrooms in Burundi and Rwanda focusing on their sustainable exploitation and their potential for cultivation. Method. The inventory is based on a literature survey completed with referenced specimens gathered during field trips between 2010 and 2015 that are deposited at the Botanic Garden Meise (BR). Results. Seventy-seven species of edible mushrooms have been listed together with their habitat and ecology. This includes 39 new records of species eaten in the region, 8 of which were not previously known to be edible. An attempt to combine the protection of natural ecosystems with the development of local populations is presented in relation to the availability of these mushrooms, their ecology and cultivation potential. Conclusions. Wild edible mushrooms constitute an interesting and under-exploited resource in Burundi and Rwanda. Sustainable gathering of ectomycorrhizal species in miombo woodlands and cultivation of saprotrophic species from montane forests suggest important food issues and interesting business perspectives.

This study aimed to make an inventory of fruit fly species in Burundi, by use of parapheromones. The trapping by parapheromones is a method used to capture fruit fly species. Four types of parapheromones were used, namely, methyl eugenol, cuelure, terpinyl acetate and trimedlure. In total, 70,115 individuals were captured, of which, 68,728 individuals (or 98.02%) were fruit flies, while 1,387 individuals (1.98%) were non-fruit flies. The majority of Tephritidae has been captured by methyl eugenol with 62,538 individuals (90.97%), followed by cuelure with 3,621 individuals (5.27%). Terpinyl acetate and trimedlure have captured 1,900 and 669 individuals, respectively. The effectiveness of parapheromones has varied from one locality to another. In fact, methyl eugenol showed efficiency in the city of Bujumbura, Rumonge, Kigwena and Cibitoke located at an altitude between 780 m and 887 m; cuelure in Bubanza and Kayanza at an altitude between 1,101 m and 2,219 m; trimedlure and terpinyl acetate at Mwaro at an altitude of 1,640 m. From the point of view of abundance of species caught, Bactrocera dorsalis dominates with 62,349 individuals (90.72%), and it is in the Bujumbura city that this species has been captured in abundance.
